OK, just let me explain. Yes I know that I said I wasn't going to buy any more astro gear in 2023, but things change, alright? It's not you, it's me. Let me explain.

So I had this really great telescope. Awesome! So I got myself set up with a dome, and this sensational iOptron CEM70G mount. Awesome. Fantastic.

Then I asked someone about their Takahashi telescope, and one thing led to another...

Now I have 2 really great telescopes! But I can't be moving either of them around on a regular basis. I put one up for sale if anyone was interested, no dice. So I did the only logical thing: I got a new mount that can carry them both.

So, back to the CEM70. I love this mount - indeed I loved both the CEM60 and CEM70, but it simply wasn't designed for 30+kg of astrophotographic payload. But let me tell you what it was designed for:

You. You and your astrophotographic pursuit of perfection. You hate cable snags? It has usb ports built into the saddle and an internal wiring loom. Need more power? It has 5.5x2.1 ports on the saddle too so you can just plug in and you're good to go. And they've covered off on the little things - the saddle clamp screws can be tightened by hand but you can also crank them up that bit further by allen key. you can also use an allen key as an extension handle on the altitude adjustment knob, allowing you to make incredible small, controlled adjustments during polar alignment. And it even comes with the allen key!

The mount is located in Eltham North, Melbourne, and has the iOptron case so can safely travel. It comes with 2 large counterweights though, so if we are shipping it, expect 2 parcels, neither of them light.

Best of all, this mount is guaranteed not to attract clouds. 100% guaranteed. Any clouds you encounter after buying this mount are purely coincidental.

I wrote a whole new spiel for it instead of just saying "bump".

It's a great mount, so it deserves a great spiel.

EQ8. I would have loved a CEM120 but I found an EQ8 at a bargain price :-D

Hi Ross,
I've been shopping for a new mount, and very interested in the CEM70. I plan to use it for a dual optic setup, so was attracted by the 30kg payload.

May I ask - why do you say it simply wasn't designed for 30+kg of astrophotographic payload ?

Also - when was it bought originally and who from - would it still be covered by warranty ?

The EQ8 was my second choice, but a bit too big for me as I don't have a pier - at least not yet :)

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

I've shot you a PM with my maths on the payloads etc.

I purchased it from Sidereal Trading in Melbourne in August 2022 so yes I expect it still has plenty of warranty.

Cheers,
Ross
