At the leading edge of the the Vela Supernova Remnant - NGC2736 is part of a shock wave moving through space at more than 600,000km/h and strikes a beautiful (if not chaotic) scene. This is one of the brightest parts of the SNR, but there's so much going on in this whole area it's hard to camp in one spot for too long!

I've been doing some widefield imaging in the region when the weather will allow, and by the end of the season should be ready to put together some mosaics, but the Pencil stands somewhat alone and so I thought I'd jump the gun and push something out now.

Stacked using APP's Ha-Oiii algorithm. Quite a bit of Ha in the background and I decided to pull it back a bit to stop it distracting from the main target. Comments/critique welcome as always!

What an interesting object. Can really see the crazy energies at play.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Adam & Dilshan
Yeah it’s a fascinating region and one that makes you pause a moment to take in the awesome magnitude of a supernova. Thanks for stopping by!

very nice Dave! I hear you on the background Ha, but I say let-er rip! reiterate others comments on the details, great stuff! would love to see what you can do with even more integration time on this one!

Thanks Wilco, Adam, Joe. Appreciate the encouragement!

Adam- yeah I’d love to have some more hours of clear sky to sit in some of these targets a bit longer. I thought from the forecast I had 3 nights of clear sky to put towards a decent mosaic in the Vela SNR (1hr per panel over 16ish panels). That 4nights turned out to be 1.5 in reality so my plans changed a bit lol.

Dave,
Lovely image on a target one would assume, quite difficult ( never imaged it )
Some nice details exposed
Sorry for pixel peeping , how was the noise floor ? Looks like a bit of noise mottle post reduction ?

Cheers
Martin

Nah all good yes well spotted. It’s a weird thing that happens in the jpg (size reduced) version if I use noise reduction. Weird cause it’s not in the larger full size version. Of course a few more hours data wouldn’t go astray either but yeah we all know that story…

It’s not a particularly difficult target if you’ve got your nb filter in. Your antila 5nm dual-band filters and the 10” newt would eat this one for breakfast.

That's great Dave, love the filigree detail on this one, excellent. Hmmm?... I must pencil that in, for a shot from Eagleview  :P
