White light/ Red light torch??

My "Stellarlite" twin led torch is over twenty years old and beginning ( like me!) to show its age.
I thought the Skywatcher torch was a dual light ie white and red as per their website but Steve said it was Red/ Red with adjustable brightness.
Anyone know where you can buy a white light/ red light torch in Melbourne???

Try the camping stores (Camping World). I saw a great one that was a white light that had a red screen that slid in front of it. It also had a dimming action, each time you clicked the button it dimmed to a lower level of illumination until after about 4 or 5 clicks it turned off.

I like my Energiser LED Headlight (http://www.energizer.com/products/flashlights/flashlight.asp?cat=4&id=3), a bit over $30 from supermarkets etc. Battery life is very good, I haven't replaced mine from new.

I've got the same one Phil, and yep it runs for ages. In fact it works best with flattened batteries I found. When new you run the risk of blinding any kangaroos within 2 kms if you accidently turn to white or over slide the mark when turning the red off (which is why I'm getting one of the other type. plus they look good at night ;) ). When flat the white hardly glows but the red is still way bright enough.

I discovered the same. Before I knew of the Energiser headlight, I bought a headlight with several settings made up by progressively turning on more white LEDS. I dived in, ripped out three white LEDS and replaced them with red LEDS so the first setting was red LED. I had to change the series resisters as well. (I always do things the hard way:sadeyes:). Well, the batteries ran down for the first time and the first I knew that they had was the white LEDs fading away while the red LEDS shone as brightly as always!

I picked up a small red/white torch from Australian Geographic for about $5. You can't keep the red on constant though, it only stays on while you hold the button down, but when you slide the red filter off the bulb this turns the white light on. Kind of hard to explain, but it was only $5.

I operated on my Energiser LED Headlight and have all red LEDs in it now.
When you switch it one way it has one red LED on, switch it the other way and you get two reds on.
It saves you accidentally blinding everyone with white light and I can run it down till the two LEDs are quite dim but am still able to use it.

I bought a red/white LED torch from Bintel a few weeks ago, it works well, sorry but I can't remember how much it was though.

My girlfriend has an Australian Geo torch - it's a pain to have to hold the red light on, juggle the dob, books, planisphere etc. I'm using a head torch with red cellophane which at least allows hands free.

Next purchase is the Energiser head torch - it sounds like just the ticket

Like a lot of others here, I have an Energiser headlight and love it! I want to open it up some time and put a larger resistor in series with the LEDs to drop the brightness a bit though. The best thing is that it frees up both hands which is always useful in the dark!

i have a mini maglite, i believe i can get a red lens for it instead of the current clear one.. might be a bit bright but should be me started
