I was going to do a run of 10 x 6 min exposures last night of M83, half way through the first one the dew and fog rolled in and conditions were terrible so l kept going for one single 10 min image. l'll try again tonight.
taken with LX 200 @ f/6.3
hand guided with ED 100 12mm reticle and 2x barlow
imaged with Canon 350D @ iso 800

Hi Mick, it is still a nice image despite the adverse conditions you experienced. Hope you get better conditions tonight.

Cheers

10 minutes wow with only minor trailing, very nice. Lots of detail there. Was this a cropped image or is this full non cropped version?

it's a full non cropped image Andrew, only a levels adjustment in PS2.

thanks Scott, l find the hand guiding quite good, as l have only just started l am not sure how much actual guiding other people do but l find l have to make very few adjustments during say a 1 minute period.

Gee, isn't that a beautiful galaxy! And what a great image Mick, even though you had to terminate the session due to clouds. There is some lovely detail in the spiral arms and I like the overall colour too.

Top job, especially for manual guiding.

Cheers

My mount has a plastic drive wheel and a brass worm. Sometimes the periodic error can be very large, but thankfully not sudden, more a gradual side to side movement over several minutes, though I cant leave the eyepiece for more then a few seconds, I make corrections every 5 seconds or so. Mike (strongmanmike) will attest the same as he used to use a similar mount, as did Paul (Photoncollector).
Based on your single image, if you can do the planned 6x10 mins, it will be a very deep image with heaps of detail. Whats your night skies like? You live on the outskirts of Melbourne?

l am about 75kms from the city with the Dandenong Ranges in between so l have a pretty good position with little light pollution.
my mount movements are very gradual with manual adjustments about every 10 to 15 seconds in general sometimes a little more often.
when guiding through the ED100 l use a 2x barlow so l'm guiding at f/18.

MIck, you had better clean your camera sensors filter glass, you have huge dust particles on it. that would ruin any shot you were/are trying to get. nice start though.
