The Snake Valley Astro Camp! November 25 – November 29 2022

Camp commences midday, Friday 25th November and concludes midday Tuesday 29th. With COVID finally fading into the background, we are now able to confidently get a Camp up and running!

Unfortunately, the Saturday night “Spit Roast under the Stars” will NOT be on this time. We would encourage everyone to plan on a communal dinner on the Saturday night starting at 6pm but on a BYO basis.

PLEASE NOTE: Fees are unchanged except that for juniors (those who have not turned 18 by 25/11/22) a single fee of $10 will apply regardless of how many nights they stay. Hopefully this will make the camp more affordable for families and juniors.

4 nights of beautiful dark sky away from City glare.
- LIMITED TO 50 BOOKINGS ONLY PER NIGHT-
(plus casual visitors also welcome, if setting up gear a $5- fee will apply)

- The observing field has 240 volt mains Power
- There are 12 bunkhouses (from 2 to 8 bunks) and lots of camping space on the observing field.
- Caravans welcome.
- Hot showers & toilets in a caravan park style amenities block.
- Large dining room for about 60 people
- Recreation room (billiards, table tennis)
- Fully equipped kitchen with all cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, fridges etc.
- Lake for swimming, fishing, canoeing etc.
- BBQ facilities
*Please note, Bunkhouses CANNOT be booked for one night only.
Exceptions are accepted if you are in a shared bunkhouse with others staying more than one night. Alternatively, the campsite is available for one night if that's all you can stay.

* Alcohol is allowed, but 'drunkenness' or use of illegal drugs will not be tolerated.
* Aerosols of any description (Aeroguard, deodorant etc) are TOTALLY BANNED on the observing field. Stray spray could (and has) permanently damage optics.
* A red light only policy is in place on the observing field after dark. Lap top screens are to be suitably shielded and dimmed. DIM Red Lights (Red LED Head Torches, etc) are acceptable. PLEASE NOTE, a sheet of cellophane taped over a tactical flashlight is not a DIM red light. If a white light must be used, please warn nearby observers before turning it on.
* Persons violating above rules will be asked to leave and will forfeit fees paid.
* We would prefer for the field to be smoke free, please consider those around you

Snake Valley Astronomy Camps are fun, low key, social events. A white light ban is in force (as expected), but due to the nature of our camps, imagers and observers are all mixed in together having a great social astronomy experience.
WHERE IS IT?
The camp is held at Camp Wedgetail (formerly Crystal Lake Cabins) in Snake Valley. Street address is 554 Linton-Carngham Rd, Snake Valley VIC 3351. If coming from Melbourne travel to Ballarat then take the Glenelg Highway to Linton and turn right onto the Snake Valley-Carngham Rd. The campsite is on your right before getting to the township of Snake Valley. Please be aware that the Snake Valley Observatory run by the Snake Valley Astronomical Association is not the site of the camp.
The Campsite a private business that we hire for the duration of the camp.

THE BUNKHOUSES
The 11 bunkhouses range from 2, 4, or 6 bunks up to several with 8 bunks (4 sets of upper and lower bunks).
They have mattresses, but no bed linen. You will need to supply your own sheets, blankets, doona's, and pillows. Or just throw a sleeping bag on the mattress.

Oh my... This looks so very tempting.

One thing to remember - it's the Victorian State Election on the 26th.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make this one Dave - it's smack in the middle of exams and report writing. So hopefully someone else will organise the pavs. All being well I'll be back in March.

I am booked too but with the weather I am giving Friday the miss. I will hopefully come up on Saturday even if it is just for beer and a chat. I might not even bring any visual gear, let alone AP.

Friday looks the best of it weatherwise but I live in hope! Wee hours of Mon morning look a chance too. It's just the year & I'd rather grumble about the weather with fellow observers than on my own at home! Looking forward to it!

So I popped up to SV on Friday. The field is a bit wet (as expected) Top half is not too bad and was mowed about 2 weeks ago, but the grass is going berserk.
Lower parts of the field are badly waterlogged. We don't have huge numbers so I think we will be OK if the weather sorta plays ball!

One thing that is an issue is that we cannot allow vehicles on the field as the risk of them getting bogged and then the field being chopped up is too great. So if setting up, sorry you will have to carry your gear.

The asphalt quadrangle has been redone with new asphalt and looks great. It still has a bit of gravel on it. I am proposing that we use that area for any that don't want to take gear on the main field. It will mean that we will need to keep vehicles in the quad to a bare minimum. There is a parking area about 30 metres north of the toilet block that can be used that was quite dry and is also fine if anyone has a van or camper.

I know it is a bit of a pain but the weather this spring has been awful and creates major issues.

Warm regards
Malcolm

The weather has certainly been a pain, the "House" dam on our place is as full as I have ever seen it and there are plenty of places around the property that I won't even take our 4WD Polaris, and that will churn its way through mud you can hardly walk through.

Thanks to everyone that came along!! The weather didn't play ball although Friday night yielded several hours of pretty good seeing and clear skies with Saturday also managing a 2-3 hours also.
The field was very damp so most setup in the quadrangle. The continuing renovations at the camp were very impressive and welcome with the much more open kitchen and new benches and cupboards making a more pleasant experience for all.
The last 2 nights unfortunately were socked in, but we managed to amuse ourselves telling stories and playing "Cards Against Humanity".
Great to see some old friends and some newcomers make their way to the camp.

Thanks Malcolm for organising the camp, a job well done! Sky on 2 out of 4 nights is also great result in these particular times. It was really good catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, and it was an only pity that circumstances transpired that I wasn’t able to stay for the whole time. Looking forward to the next one!

My thanks also to you Malcolm for doing the hard work of organisation so that we can enjoy time under the stars (or clouds or rain - whatever!). Very much appreciated and good to see familiar faces after many years. Until next time.

Yep great camp, good to catch up with everyone. Even though I set up in the middle of the field and had to trudge through the wet field dozens of times!
Thanks Malcolm for organizing it.

P,S, Who won the best sense of humour game?
P.S. May have left a couple of pairs of binoculars there.

Bluester & I have already booked for VicSouth this year.
It’s a great weekend- shame it may clash with any proposed activity at SV.
