Veil Nebula - C14 Hyperstar

The Cygnus Loop is a supernova remnant covering an enormous amount of sky (about 3degrees). It's an absolutely beautiful region with tonnes to see - and split into several components - 2 of which i've captured here: NGC6960 (Western Veil / Witch's Broom) & NGC6992 (Eastern Veil)

Catch is it's so low for us southerners. I've literally got about 90min where this thing is above my fence, but since I had the Hyperstar on the c14 after grabbing some comet pics, i knew I could get a decent amount of depth from a fairly short window of opportunity - even though I'm looking low and directly into the Sydney CBD lights.

The starfield is pretty bad after an on-the-fly attempt to fix a backspacing issue, only managing to make things 10x worse. Thats the drawback of imaging at f1.9 on and sct - its so sensitive to any misalignment, especially when I'm switching configurations back and forth. So do me a solid and don't zoom in - we'll all be happier.

Great shots Dave, always good to see a shot of this area from the mid southern latitudes. It's certainly a sight to behold visually through a big 24" Dob under Bortle 1 skies in far north QLD too :D

You must have a nice clear line of sight in your yard ( lucky you ). Im surrounded by 2 storey homes ( mine included ) and huge trees , absolutely no view ( below 75 deg ) from SSE all the way to the West. So many objects I can’t capture. Winge winge winge
Heading down to my Dome on Monday for a couple of weeks , 360deg views from 25 deg up , yippee now for the bloody rain to bugger off

Martin- Yes I’ve got pretty good views from east to north-west, but unfortunately that’s also the direction of the worst light pollution. But for low targets I’ve got to dodge quite a few obstacles no matter where I’m shooting. You must be excited to be going south with your big scope for a bit. Look forward to some images from you if the weather is kind!

Stephane- thanks mate it’s a beautiful target but yeah you gotta have a line of sight first :P. It’s a HUUUGE advantage shooting with 14” of aperture at f1.9- it just pulls in so much data in such a short time. Of course there’s no such thing as a free lunch… these things are ridiculously sensitive to any shift in collimation or even mirror flop. I had a decent field imaging up at the meridian and then moving down low I reckon the mirror has shifted a bit putting alignment and collimation out and some rushed adjustments really didn’t work well…

Hi astro744- yes it’s got a funky blue/red 3d vibe doesn’t it! It’s one of those targets that comes up really well with a dual-narrowband filter even from the suburbs.

It is at approx. 25 deg. altitude from Sydney. All you need is a dark northern horizon. An O-III filter at low power really makes it stand out. It is a big but faint object.

Yes it gets up to 25degrees and honestly shows up pretty well on the subs almost immediately with a narrow band filter. So as long as you have a line of sight it’s worth a crack. My northern horizon is horribly bright so dont be too afraid to give it a go. A great mosaic project for someone who’s game enough to try…

Thanks Adam- yeah it’s a monster all right - and damn hard to tame but mate when you’ve only got a few hours of clear sky per week it’s unreal to have a light bucket! I don’t think Vela snr is up right now but when it is I’ll give it a go. But that things huge - around 8degrees so would need some serious clear sky to do it justice!

you seem to have it well heeled! i see pretty round stars all the way to the corners, an amazing effort for an aps-c shot with a reflector at f2!
