My brother in law found this old photo and is trying to find out more about this man who is a long lost family member.

Does anyone know what this uniform may represent?

We asked the same of my Great Grandfather who escaped the Sheffield Steel mills to become a professional musician. In his case the uniform represented nothing other than looking smart!

Hey Alex, as mentioned it is a uniform worn when participating in a band, Alice has been tracing back her family and has many photos of the family members wearing similar uniforms.

In those days it was smart apparel whilst being in the band.;)

However to actually trace your family member could be challenging but an interesting project.

Stay well mate

Leon

Rather than just the uniform, if you can get someone to identify the decorations / badges on the uniform around the pocket, it may take you a little further down the road. A lot of people collect those sort of things.
Just a thought.

Hi Alex

I have a brother who knows a fair bit about military matters, I sent him the photo, and this is his response. Hopefully the links will be of use.

The closest uniform I know of to that is the frock coat uniform of the British Army's Blues and Royals, though there were more similar at the likely time of the picture.
The cut is all wrong for a military uniform of the British Empire days.
I would think this a Brass Bandsman's uniform from the late 1800's to about 1920's, or perhaps a marching band of the same period?
I don't think it's a marching band uniform though. More like those bands that used to set up in a rotunda in the park and play for the picnickers.
If you know of his country.... or assuming he's here in Oz, I'd hit up the state archives for brass bands... Like this...
