CELESTRON CGE MOUNT - BELT DRIVE

The CGE Mount was released in 2002 and is the American made predecessor to the current CGE Pro a Chinese produced mount introduced around 2010.
Celestron tried to produce a high quality mount by using H.M.Berg (https://www.wmberg.com/products/gears) to produce the high precision bronze gear drive and Losmandy to make the rest of it. These mounts were let down by the Ethernet patch cables and RJ45n sockets, the mechanical side was very good the electronic side not so good.

Something a little different, this is a modified CGE mount that no longer uses the notoriously troublesome Celestron electronics, plugs and motors. The connecting plugs are now Male Female Plug, Aviation Air Socket connectors with high quality wiring.

This mount has been converted to EQ6 / HEQ6 Skywatcher electronics, Skywatcher Stepper Motors and a modified Rowan Belt Drive System, thus making it repairable and future proofing it. Skywatcher parts are readily available, once Celestron brings out a new mount the parts supply dries up.

Carrying capacity is 28kg; these mounts were designed to carry a C14. The CGE mount was made in the USA by Losmandy for Celestron, that’s why they were highly regarded for astrophotography. You can see a lot of Losmandy G11 parts used in these mounts.

The R.A. and Dec gears are 180 teeth, 5.625” diameter (U.S. manufactured by W.M. Berg) bronze drive gear mated with stainless steel worm shafts preloaded to maintain gear mesh while clutch tension varies, manufactured to AGMA 10 quality. In comparison the Losmandy G11 drive system uses the same 5.625" diameter gears but it’s a 7075 aluminium gear with 360 teeth.
Gear size matters for accurate tracking the Skywatcher eq6/ HEQ6 gear size is 92mm or 3.6 inches compared to the CGE’s 5.625 inch or142mm.

The original electronics module has been replaced with a longer version milled out of a solid block of aluminium in order to fit the Skywatcher face panel and cables. It also houses three separate Jaycar power supplies, 2 x 12volt to supply power to the mount or dew heaters or other devices and 1x 5 volt outlet.

There is also a 115mm counterweight extension bar; you can mount a C11 with only one counterweight.
There is the option to mount the CGE mount on the tripod or on a pier, included is a 250mm diameter base plate that can easily be bolted to any pier top plate, if this is used the mount can be assembled and disassembled and polar alignment isn’t lost.

Everything apart from the weights fits into the custom Pelican 1650 case.
Comes with 2 x counterweights.
A unique mount that will be working long into the future.
