This won't be too popular with the PC crowd or the so-called 'Feminazis'...

but I think Sir Patrick Moore has voiced the opinions of many of us, in regard to the parlous state of free-to-air TV these days.

I'm not saying I agree with him that women are to blame, but I'm pleased he's given his opinion.

He has earned the right to comment on broader issues than just astronomy. IMHO:)

 Good ol Sir Pat, theres nothing like hitting a bee hive with a big stick to see what happens.

Mind you "free to air" TV is about 70% pure rubbish.
One day I'll get Foxtel or something like that and watch 24 hour Sci-Fi channel :P

Cheers

Sir Patrick Moore is entitled to his ultra conservative or ultra right wing views but I hardly think that there is a correllation between the advent of women in television and the dross that is now presented as programs.

What does he want Ivanhoe, Tarzan, Robin Hood and Hopalong Cassidy in B&W?

I guess it depends on what he was blaming them for???

I think he has a point. I'd like to see the viewing figures for all these cr@ppy programs split between men and women.

demographics dont lie! the tv stations are only pandering to them. Its mens fault that tv is like it is, if we watched it, they would cater to to us more. i blame the internet, that when fellas really stopped watching tv.
in my experience you ask/talk to most males, about something on tv, and they will proudly say, 'I dont watch tv' with the all sorts of connontations in the inflection ie - only chicks weirdos invalids and pansies watch tv (outside of sport) like it is a sign of femininity or something? and their either doing something manly and useful, like working out in the shed, or at the pub, fixing the car you name it.
and i agree about star trek too, they ruined it, thats why i bought the original series, james kirk with an alien chick falling for him on his arm in every quadrant, and they all wear next to nothing, chicks should never be on the observation deck except in some sexy attire ie short short skirts or a diapohonous roman toga and prefrably wrestling to the death with each other (over a man)
and when Internet 2 comes along eventually thatll be the end of bit torrent? so we'll have to go back to watching tv like we used to

watching the glossy adds is a good indicator of demographics, hmm lets see there mostly for (glossy) shampoo's, moisturisers and anti-ageing lotions , sanitary items, chocolate, sales... oh and even the current affairs shows are now half about cellulite removal creams, anti wrinkle lotions *sigh* come on now

i take one look at the TV guide at the beginning of the week and think heck "nothing on!"

slightly aside......funny how we tend to allow old people their funny ways of thinking ie, i did not agree with everything the old pope said (he could be very conservative).....but i really respected him

and its worse than that, even foxtel is being feminised, i notice with the movie channels, the ratio of movie's is changing, there is more and more budget 'chick flicks' to the blockbusters, they seem to be teetering off. and even worse, that special creature called the 'teen chick flick' omg, wheres my gun?

..and before anyone says what about 9/11 or 6 of 9 and that other one in the more recent series's , well i say there token babes, and they have to emasculating dominatrix/lara croft/Xena b*** breakers to pass muster, and while their suits are tightly fitting, they certainly dont show any skin or cleavage heaven forbid!

I have Austar (Foxtel) and i hardly ever watch free to air tv anymore...all the news is BAD news and the great thing about Austar is it has more of the stuff i want to watch, but it also has it drawbacks....repeated movies that i cant stand for one, but i love the CI channel, Channel V on friday nights when Amber Lady comes on! (GO! the honey wrestling chicks in bikinis:D )
Air crash investigation is always a great program.......
what do i get on free to air tv.....i hardly watch channel 7 or 10, so i watch channel 9....crappy footy coverage, Eddie Macguires head which is wider than wide screen tv, and the crappiest ads i have ever seen on tv! Especially the McDonalds ones...:bashcomp:
As for feminisation, how many shows do we have to have with Antonia Kidman talking about motherhood??? Im sure CH9 have been there and done that !

Television is crap and I find pay TV almost as bad (rubbish you pay for). But I must admit it has sunk to new lows in the last 6-7 years or so with lifestyle programs and so called reality TV :screwy:

However much I admire Sir Patrick I don't think you can blame the ladys for the lamentable state of Television, I betcha most telly execs are blokes.

Gotta love that quote ;)

Patrick Moore is entitled to his opinion......and to whatever decade he choses to live in.

I think the Tele dishes up what sells. It is a sad indibtment on us all.

Daytime telly is a waste of time.
Except for Antiques Roadshow and Mash in the afternoons.
The only night time stuff I watch is Spicks & Specks and Catalyst. BB is my secret shame.
If you don't like what on the box, turn it off and read a book.

I think he's also entitled to say what he wants but I do have one point to make. The BBC is most definitely *NOT* free to air. In fact, if we in the UK do not pay the BBC license fee (about AUS$250) each year and yet still have the cheek to buy a television we can go to prison for it :eyepop:

There are some of us who remember that TV and radio licences were also levied in Australia. Luckily it wasn't policed all that well and it was finally dropped.

Ambermile

It's not the license I am against as such but more the compulsory purchase that galls. On the other hand - no license == no Patrick!

Arthur, if you had to watch australian free to air then you would know what galled is ;) id gladly pay the fee. i lived in the UK for 2 and a half years, and unless its changed since then, you guys have it good. no faraday talks ect. ect. on air here mate, i remember your ads were mostly confined to between shows mostly and in allotted groupings, and they werent the willy nilly local low quality provincal bs we have to watch in the provinces. you guys had standards from memory - something lacking here.
We never once had a tv licence and had tvs where-ever we went, I wouldnt be complaining about your 'free-air-to-air'
I REALLY missed british tv when i got home.

The best thing about tv is it keeps most of the crims off the streets at night. Leaving me more room to get up to some mischief...

..in fact i've always got the impression that they didnt want you to watch tv here ... then along came foxtel ahhhhh
uktv channel atm eastenders followed by thermoman, and then extras on monday night ahhh ...you did something right rupert
my only real big complaint with foxtel is they really seem to labouringly push this funny game with no apparent skills that i can see, were they dont mark the ball or handpass ect. full of monsyllable big neanderthal boofheads hmmmmm someone has an interest in promoting this boring crap :P RUPERT STOP IT ..GIVE IT UP ..WE ARE NEVER GONNA WATCH THAT S*** DOWN SOUTH!!! AS IF WE DONT WATCH ENUFF SPORT ALREADY

I love foxtel for the football (the round ball game) as you get about 12-15 live games per week. Well worth the money each month, the missus loves uktv and the kids(all teenagers) love mtv, channel v and the comedy channel.

yeh foxtel/austar rox (compared to any alternative at this point) I love the way with uk tv how they do their ads like they would (or at least used to) in the uk, mostly in between shows how it should be

i should clarify re RL, what i am refering to is the aus news channel (that for some reason is half sport!? wtf when you have a multichannel sports channel and you have to fill half the au news with sport?) but even stranger is that funnily 80 or 90% of the sport is blommin about RL  :screwy:

Can i ask Gazz, do they watch Channel V on friday nights when Amber Lady comes on? Its quite tacky but ok to watch....hehe:P

you have to be an orphan from somalia to get that these from her these days
didnt she used to go out with her brother? has evryone forgotten? charming!
anyway, i dont trust anyones buttocks anymore they could be enhanced? I'm sure if most ladies were as rich as her and could do nothing but have a personal trainer to work out 10 hours a day with liposuction/best surgeons the world, they would look as 'good'
i think she is overrated by far - sorry - i like the real ppl - like Raquel Welch in One Million Years BC for instance :scared: ;)

matt
10-05-2007, 01:02 PM
I'm with you, fringy:thumbsup:

Sure... she's cultivated that whole 'nasty', dark 'bad girl' persona, but so has a whole brace of wannabe sexpots who've got nothing more going for them other than hype and a pretty face.

If Britney Spears or Paris Hilton can be considered 'sexy' or 'bad'... where does it all end?

10-05-2007, 04:40 PM
Hmmm, of course guys i wouldnt stop there, what about Rose McGowan??
Or Meg Ryan......she seems like fun!

By the way, as far as ads go...the one at the moment which has annoyed me greatly are the "Soul" adverts......ARRRRGHHHH!

I have a TV about 10 feet away from me and have'nt watched a full program on it since it was bought 2 months ago and after reading you guys comments probably won't watch it for a long time to come. Much prefer a good book or a DVD of my choice that I can watch in uninterrupted peace without some fool excitedly telling me about the latest McDonalds deal. If J.L. Baird could see TV now he would give up and take up Plumbing. ;)

Ambermile
10-05-2007, 11:48 PM

I agree Glenhuon, a DVD is always a good choice......maybe i oughtta watch the 2003 Grand Final in which the Panthers outplayed the roosters....for the 20th time! Yeehaa!

Good thinking 99!

Cheers!
