With a brief run of clear evenings I took the opportunity of testing my new Canon EOSR5 which I plan to use during the solar eclipse in 2023.

I found getting a "natural" HDR new moon image to be quite the challenge!

While the small pixels of this camera give it excellent resolution, they saturate quickly...with this simple composition requiring six different exposure times and combination to finally look right.

Lovely result Peter. You've done a good job on processing a difficult subject with such high dynamic range. It is always a challenge trying to make this phase of the moon appear similar to what the naked eye sees. Nice one!

Tops image Peter! Very topical. As you say hopefully Artemis 1 makes it tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your comments gentlemen.

The sight of a thin crescent moon is often very sublime and surprisingly difficult to capture well due its low altitude and high dynamic range.

Getting an accurate rendition is not exactly rocket science, but I see the Artemis team are struggling with their first launch. The moon can be a tricky prize indeed!
