The Cat's Paw

Hi all,

I finally got 10 hours on the Cat's Paw nebula with my new ZWO ASI2600mc pro. Unfortunately I didn't get the spacing quite right with the coma corrector on the first few hours, so there is some coma in the corners, but hopefully that won't be such an issue moving forward.

Please feel free to comment and offer suggestions.

That’s a fine image of the Cats Paw
It’s not any easy target but you have mitigated the noise floor quite well will plenty of good data and produced some nice subtle detail. Colour is excellent too
Well done !!
PS: Can I suggest you eventually get yourself a TS Optics GPU coma corrector ( when you can afford it ) you’ll never look back

Thanks Dean, I love the filter. It cuts through light pollution quite well and brings out the hydrogen and oxygen nicely. (Not much oxygen in this image though)



Thanks Martin. It took me a few processing attempts to get the image where I wanted it. I think I will eventually buy the TS Optics GPU CC, but might have to wait a bit. I need to go easy on the spending for a while!

Thanks Michael. Funny you mention about the orange, I thought the same and wasn’t quite sure how to bring it to red without messing up my back background colour. I thought of applying a colour mask or even a plain old lightness mask, but decided in the end to keep as is. Any suggestions?

Looking at it again, I think the colour variation within the Cats Paw is pretty subtle and while there certainly is some, there is also a lot of reddening intervening dust between us and it too, soooo, probably somewhere between a burnt orangy-red and magenta is the likely reality :shrug:.. so I think it is largely semantics..but it is clearly not a nebula to image if you are after wildly differing colour hues :)
