This is a detail view of the Homunculus Nebula surrounding the star η Carinae. The detail image is a cropped and drizzled image taken with 120 subframes of 5 seconds each through a Ha filter. It overlies an image of the Carina Nebula I took earlier this year. At 1270mm focal length there is only a hint of bi-lobed structure of the nebula that can be seen at longer focal lengths. Twice the focal length would have been much better! A bigger image is available on Astrobin (https://www.astrobin.com/full/qs78eo/0/?mod=&real=).

Kevin,
Great effort there trying to expose the Bi lobe behind Eta
Well done !!
I saw the Bi lobe last year behind Eta for the first time on a moonless night down south , using my 12” Goto dob and Televue 21mm ethos eye piece. It appeared as a faint holographic sphere behind the Star. You have to apply averted vision to see it , quite amazing.
I had to look twice to prove I wasn’t seeing things

Cheers

Wow!! Nice shot mate. Really sharp! Might even be some more of the lobes revealed with shorter subs perhaps.
Your shot has reminded me that I started working on a long fl image of the bipolar lobes earlier this year but haven’t yet gone through all the data so thanks for the reminder!

Thanks guys. At 5 seconds per sub it didn't take a lot of effort although processing was surprisingly difficult given the high dynamic range. I look forward to seeing what you put together with your data Dave.

I'm a little ashamed to say that I've never put an eyepiece into either of my scopes. There has only ever been a camera hanging off the back. I'm planning some trips to dark sites soon so maybe I should give visual a try! :P

Lovely image Kevin, not overly done, and very natural looking.
