Hi

Hope this is of interest to the aircraft fans.

Was cleaning out the shed and found a forgotten box of colour slides. included were some shots from the Edinburgh air show of about 1970. They include some of the more interesting RAAF aircraft from the period and also some of the RAF aircraft that used to regularly visit during the Blue Steel days.

Was glad to find some Lightning images - once watched one of these take off from Darwin, turn on its tail with full afterburners, and head through the sound barrier in a vertical climb (that's what the pilot claimed). Astonishing brute of a thing.

Quality is not up to modern standards but good enough to show what was there (in those days, the light meter on my East German camera did not work and it didn't have a rangefinder). The emulsions had developed hundreds of mould patches, but there was enough image left to restore with clone stamp.

Oh wow.... Aircraft nerd heaven.

I never realised that Oz had F4-Phantoms. I knew they had the F111s, Mirages and little A4-Skyhawks (flying off the HMAS Melbourne).

That Vulcan looks like an absolute monster...

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
V

glad you enjoyed Steve - I was happy to find this lot.

I think that we leased the Phantoms while waiting for the F111s. Yes, the V bombers were deadly serious machines and impressive to see in flight. I think that particular Vulcan would still have been an operational Strategic bomber, but the Victors would have been the tankers that got everything out here.

Cheers

Thanks Ray, some iconic aircraft in that series. The Vulcan is awesome and there is something quite special about the Lightning.:)

Not so long ago I watched a documentary about the Vulcan that flew to the Falklands, quite an extraordinary mission for that era.

Cheers

Hi Ray

My parents live close farnbrough airport uk , Major airshow every 2nd year. Remember the Vulcan coming over the house doing the vulcan howl. If you can, go on YouTube and find the Vulcan howl farnbrough.

Ray...thanks for the post ....great pic's.

I turned up there 2 years later ( 1972 ) to start my RAAF career....( 50years ago this year )

So,I missed all of that.

thanks Phil. glad you found them interesting

thanks Col. Yeah, I hadn't realised how much these shots show a transition period. The RAAF was undergoing major changes in hardware and the RAF aircraft represented the end of an era. Pity you missed this collection I guess, but there was some really interesting gear that came along after.

Cheers Ray
