A new catalogue for those with large telescopes looking for a challenge.

MASH Catalog of Planetary Nebulae (Parker+ 2006) http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/Cat?V/127 (http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/Cat?V/127)
http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/vizier/MASH/gallery.htx has images of the PNe.

The Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα Planetary Nebula Catalogue (MASH)
contains 905 new true, likely and possible Galactic Planetary Nebulae
(PNe) discovered from the AAO/UKST Hα survey of the southern
Galactic plane. The combination of depth, resolution, uniformity, and
areal coverage of the Hα survey has opened up an hitherto
unexplored region of parameter space permitting the detection of this
significant new PN sample.

The attached tab delimited file lists 45 "bright" MASH PNe.
Diameters are in arc secs.

Glen, I have downloaded the file and will have a go at some in the future.

Kent Wallace from California is an expert observer of PN and he says:
"A MASH bright PN might be visible in my 20" if it has a strong O-III line. The late Mike Kerr commented to me how tough these guys are. Mike was a hell of an observer and he is the only one I know of who started to try these guys. Anyway I plan to try a few of these bright MASH PNe this summer if they are small and have a strong O-III line."

Hi Glen,

Thanks for the post.

Quentin Parker gave a very interesting presentation to the ASNSW on 30th
June last year, describing the methodology as to how the survey was carried out.
Congratulations to Quentin and the team at Macquarie University.

Congratulations also to Andrew Murrell for discovering his own PNe that was
not covered by the survey. I had the privilege of being present with Andrew
at the time, but he kept very quiet about it until we were most of the way
back home. While filling up at the service station, Andrew said to me, "I think
I may have discovered something".

Quentin congratulated Andrew in person at the ASNSW meeting. Andrew's
PNe was only one of two discovered by amateurs in that year (2004).

Andrew reported that they observed it again most recently through the 25"
Obsession at Coonabarabran in March. It's a very challenging object.

Hi Ron,

Hope you have been well.

If you go over to the Argo Navis User's Group, you can download three
User Catalog files which represent the entire MASH survey.

The files can be found in the MASH folder beneath the User Catalogs folder
in the Files section.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/argo_navis_dtc/files/User%20Catalogs%20/MASH/

The MASH Catalog was divided into three Argo Navis User Catalog text files.

* mash_true.txt - True PN
* mash_likely.txt - Likely PN
* mash_possible.txt - Possible PN

You can then use the Argonaut utility to download them into your Argo Navis.

Good hunting!

Best Regards

For people wanting to know more about this survey, Quentin Parker has written a feature about the MASH project in the current May/June issue of Australian Sky & Telescope.
