Yes, he died from an infection caused by an ill fitting leg brace. There is a photo of him stood next to his brother who was 6' 1". The caption said in an
attempt at humour, that Robert was the one with glasses.

And not long after he died, they achieved purified penicillin for the first time, which probably would have saved him. Very sad indeed.

Still on the bright side we have a bunch of 15ft sasquatch alive and well in Americas Pacific northwest who seem to be doing just fine, according to many locals that is.

If they had saved him, his life would not have been very good, or very long, with all the effects of his acromegaly, and his huge size, increasingly reducing his quality of life.
There was an American woman who was 8' 5", had the same affliction, and
also died at a very young age, if I remember correctly.

He was still growing when he died , would have gone over 9" tall !
Real shame he did not live longer .:(

I'm not sure it was a shame Bobby; can you imagine what it would be like to
live in a world of midgets, be treated as a freak, be in and out of hospital with various ailments, live with chronic pain, unable to do what everybody else does, such as get in a car, run around and kick a ball, go through a doorway
without having to almost go on your hands and knees, etc: etc: a hell of a life.

I stood next to a life size figure of him once . Think it was at the empire state building . I am 193cm tall and felt quite short next to him
