Looking at getting back into Gaming. Years ago a group of mates and I would have all night session (usually Saturday) playing Command & Conquer or Warcraft (which I really sucked at).

So what is your ideal gamming platform ... dedicated Laptop, PC or are you a console (PS4, Xbox, Nintendo) devote.

Laptop presents a more portable but expensive option compared to a PC setup.

Yep. PC and Xbox. Counter Strike Source and Global Offensive are what I do for quick casual games. Currently replaying Subnautica on PC and Alien Isolation as well. And Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox. Also finishing off Halo Infinite on PC
I also jump into Doom Eternal to try and beat the master levels on Nightmare difficulty..

I don’t really game on my laptop though I’ve got Minecraft Dungeons on there if the kids want to play it when we’re away, though we usually take the Xbox :)

One thing I’ll say is Game Pass Ultimate is the greatest subscription service ever, across all markets

Sub $1000 Old school tower box

World of Tanks or World of Warships are both good, they hold back graphic upgrades for a long time so you don't need a very powerful/up-to-date PC to play. (They only recently switched to direct X 11)

If your getting older and slower as a gamer like myself, Warships is the better option.

My ideal setup involves regaining the use of my left arm and hand so i can actually play anything, but never going to happen in this country. ;p

I started sim racing last year on my desktop and bought the Fanatec SLC DD (direct drive) wheel base.
This replaced an 20 year old Logitec wheel and makes a huge difference.
Playing Assetto Corsa.

I may be the odd one out but having attempted to get addicted 20 odd years ago I can't see it as a worthwhile use of my time........life is tough enough as it is dealing with upcoming cancer treatments.

So how am i expected to afford an xbox? Plus this controller has buttons on the left side, its my left side that is paralised and not controllable. Non od these assistive technologies are ever available, they are uni projects you are seeing and so adapted to fit and be used by one specific person but never get picked up for funding to be available to others, same with mental computer controls that have been around for more than 30 yrs they never go anywhere to help a single person beyond the original test subject , and like the treatment i was trying to get access to, it was pioneered over 15 yrs ago, its expensive and our government won allow it to even be trialed in australia du e to their antiquated definition, attitudes and greed for profit. Disabilities are never simple everyone has a unique set of personal struggles. My main one is sourcing a gun to just end it all finally.

But thanks for trying, I was a playstation and PC gamer never xbox ;p

You should check it out before dismissing it because boy you dismissed it very quickly! ;) The controller has fantastic reviews from people who use it, with some severe disabilities as well. Definitely people without the proper use of limbs that use it. It's programmable so you can configure it to do anything. I've even seen people gaming with their feet on it.

As for affording, well I don't know your financial situation, sorry.

Gran Turismo on PlayStation used to be my thing.
However for the new one I’d need a new PlayStation. But I’d rather have Astro stuff.
Flight Sim 2020 is my new spare time burner.

PC all the way, although the new consoles have good horsepower if you can find one. cpu prices are good at the moment - graphics cards are better than they have been price wise but still inflated unfortunately. my friend just purchased a laptop with a ryzen 5600h and rtx 3050, it was able to run cyberpunk 2077 well enough on high/medium settings which is pretty impressive for a lower/medium end gaming laptop. i've got a couch gaming pc and a desktop. the desktop i mostly game on linux but dual boot into windows if i absolutely have to.

If you're a Game Pass subscriber, you'll be happy that Microsoft is buying Activision then!

I was always a dabbler at gaming, mostly because I sucked at a lot of games because when the sh*t hits the fan my fine motor skills got out the window on that tiny thumbstick.

But recently I found Oculus Quest2 and it's blown my socks off. I sold my old XBox immediately. virtual reality gaming i where it's at.

For one thing, if you want to shoot something, it's not a matter of twiddlng tiny thumbsticks to match a crosshair with a target - you just aim the gun and shoot (far more accurately, I might add).

For another thing, it's FAR more immersive. There's a zombie mode in Pavlov that is really scary when you get overwhelmed, because it's not happening across the room on a screen, they're right up in your face. Even things like shooting arrows in skyrim is much more accurate. Now you can get haptic vests it's verging into 'Ready Player One' territory. I'm almost finished Half-Life Alyx which is an amazing game. Can't wait for more AAA titles to be released. And I like the fitness ones too. Crazy Kung Fu is my favorite because you play against a wooden dummy. The other hand-to-hand combat ones feel a bit too real. I feel bad punching someone in the face.

And they're only like $600. Best money I ever spent.

Oh my god - playing Skyrim and any sort of Half-Life game on a VR headset and I might starve to death without ever taking them off, either before or after my wife leaves me. Rabbit hole, here I come....

Nah ... they will just recruit you for the Marines, Navy, Airforce and possibly Coast Guard .. well maybe not the latter.

If you do want to do those GPU intensive games, you'll need the cable which attaches it to the PC. Oculus sell one for a ridiculous price, but you can get one much cheaper online. It's just a 5m USB-C cable

Cheers

I find in those games where you move around in vr you overheat pretty quickly!! it's pretty intense.

Lol. I think the fact you don't want to know suggests you already do!
