We have had cloudy conditions and rain for the past few days so no observing.

I happened to look outside last night at 10.15 pm and saw a glow in the sky from N S & W as if the sun had just set and it was twilight.

This has happened a number of times before when I have been observing on a clear night. It's not the sky glow from Melbourne or the moon because it's happened when there is no moon at all it's just the horizon brightens between 10 & 11pm then about midnight it darkens again.

Last night was more noticeable because of the cloud cover.

I took a couple of quick shots but without a tripod so they're a bit shaky:doh:

.
Both 10sec single shots 10.13pm and 10.15 pm. Straight from the camera no processing or enhancement. This is exactly how light the sky was at the time.

Can anyone explain why this happens and have you experienced the same thing

The 87% moon was up till 2:48 am that night in Melbourne. Maybe it was that.

light looks to be coming from under the clouds Barb, isnt a footy oval or something like that in that direction?

Barb you will probably find that the air has a lot of moisture in it and is reflecting the light from below, I get the same effect from the sunshine cost sometimes even though there is no clouds.
