Darwin Best Lightning Month one for the Darwin members

Hi Guys.

I have spent a lot of different times in Darwin during the Dry and the Wet.

The last time i went up to do some Lightning Photography and think i might have gone a little early in the season.:shrug:

This time i am intending to go up in early January and first two weeks in February.2023:)

What i need to ask who know, what is the best Month for the best storms .
So who can tell me please, any Darwin people here that would know.:thumbsup:

Hey Leon,

I’ve been living in Darwin for 15 years, and like everywhere else the weather is increasingly unpredictable.

Below is a link to a paper about it from BOM which suggests Jan would be the best month.

Anecdotally I would say that I agree. End of build up (November) can also be good. Feb is usually a bit too late, but I’ve noticed it’s getting wetter for longer and later.

The monsoons don’t bring a lot of lightening just a lot of rain and a well deserved drop in humidity.

Best place to look is out over the Arafura Sea. Lots of gorgeous places for that. Try the sailing club in Fannie Bay, best sunsets and storms. Along with some great food and a cold beer.

Thank you indeed Hemi, I usually travel up in the van and camp out somewhere, last time i went I was lucky enough to camp out at Robbies Reserve during the wet, but that was because i was the Ground keeper there once for 12 months.

However that is not possible this time.:sadeyes:

I have looked and will be renting a small unit overlooking the Nightcliff Foreshore. ;)

Cant wait for next year to roll around.

Well Leon don’t listen to me!
It’s March 4th and we are in the midst of the mother of all electrical storms.

I think there are a confluence of them all around. 360 degrees of light show and no rain the middle!

Wow that would be so good, I suppose one cant predict when and where they will appear.

As long as I can go home with at least one cracker of a strike i will be happy.

They say one needs to take 100 shots to end up with a saver or two.

Nightcliffe foreshore is ok , but I’d go for the side facing the harbour to the west. I live in Fannie Bay and the most spectacular storms seem to be across the harbour towards Wagait beach so other areas are The Gardens or Larrakeyah
