Another Gabriela Mistral pic - but a first for me:)

Well pumped about this image because its a first for me in a few ways:

* More important than anything, it represents 2 clear nights in a row, which I cant remember seeing in Bris since mid October

* Proper first light for the scope and mount

* First light for the mono camera, and my first foray into mono imaging

* First crack at this target, shes a beaut!

First is in HSO palette. 'Bin version for something that isnt compressed into 200kb :( https://www.astrobin.com/58zok6/0/

Second is HOO. Deep reds are sexy :)

Esprit 120
294MM, 4min subs at unity
Optolong 7/6.5nm filters
EQ6R pro (0.4 arcsecond average RMS, pointing at the pole is amazing for guide performance :)
Tiny bit of MLT in these, and no decon / sharpening at all.

I don't know if it's just me but there does seem to be some finer detail in the second image which I like better

well, unless you looked at the astrobin version of the HSO image, the jpeg compression to post it on here seems to have had way more detrimental effects on image quality than the HOO version.

That said, different colour palettes do reveal contrast in different ways. i agree the HOO version lets the dark nebula parts to stand out a little more and i do like palettes that look a little more 'natural'.

Nice one.
I find this target difficult as there is so much going on. So much RGB and narrowband wavelengths to manage. The Ha will fill the entire image if you let it!

Aesthetically I prefer the Hoo version - In the HSO version that Pink O3 looks out of place to my eye - which is used to seeing it in cyan/blue.

cheers chris! absolutely. i think thats a fair comment for the entire carina complex. you get such good snr anywhere in the region you point the camera and its proximity allows you to resolve astounding details even at modest fl's. truly an amazing region of space from our little vantage point in the universe.

the only way you mitigate the 'so much going on' problem in my mind is either really creative framing, or mosaics. one requires precision, one requires persistence :) cant wait to give them both a go!

thanks andy. yea the pinks in hso are definitely divisive :) i like the simplicity of the palette compared to the schticking you've got to do with sho.

that said i am in the process of doing the obligatory sho palette version now, and a version in my favourite find on the net, the 'dynamic' rgb palette.
