It really does seem to be an extravagant waste to
just let it burn up and what's left ditch it in the ocean:question:

I agree -
why can't they send it into orbit around the Moon?
It would be a very handy thing to have for the coming Moon missions.
It would be the only place close by if something went wrong on the Moon
and the astronauts had to escape to safety -
or it could help to send vital provisions to astronauts on the Moon
in case something was needed urgently.
It could be used as a kind of storage area for backup supplies of vital components and food.

It's a pity it can't crash land somehow into earth. Transport it to an area where people can get to it. Surely it wouldn't cost as much to do that as it does to run it in space for a couple of years? What a major tourist attraction it would make.

Why no?
The only reason I can see is that the structure of the ISS
may not be able to stand the G forces of being sent into a Moon orbit.
Still - the reasons haven't been discussed as the question has never been asked.
It seems a terrible waste to send such an expensive space station into the ocean.
