Jan 30th. The active region (sunspot) 2936 has increased in size dramatically as it moves westward across the sun's disc. In this image taken today (Jan 30th mid afternoon AESST). I measured its diameter (across) to be 89,750 km. This makes it one of the largest so far of cycle 25. It produced a minor M1.1 flare at the end of Jan 29th that resulted in a radio blackout affecting the Pacific Ocean region. Single exposure with a canon 550d camera attached to a 81 mm WO refractor and herschel wedge.

Thanks for viewing.

Hi John,

Lovely clear image. I have been following it this afternoon. Saw a “small” flare and confirmed it on GONG. Hope it produces more.

Richard.
