Saw that reproduced in the morning news feed. Like a mushrooom cloud. I read there is a warning for people to move to higher ground on Lord Howe and Norfolk with Tsunami pulses in California.

Thanks for sharing that remarkable vision Hans. Hopefully everyone stays safe.

Have been following the news stories about this eruption, reports of damage on the east coast off NZ and about 9:00pm last night , according to the buoys off the coast, there was an approx 0.5 mtr drop in the ocean level and within 30 mins an 1.00 mtr rise. Lucky it was in our evening so less people in the water swimming etc, would have been some very strong currents swirling around.
Haven't read much about the Pacific Islands and how they were affected but saw some video from Fiji that showed a strong tsunami surge. Certainly hope that the island populations are safe and there are no casualties.

It was even heard in Fiji, almost 1000km away...

The energy release is phenomenal. You can see the faint initial blast pressure wave on the widefield satellite loop. :eyepop: I reckon a few Tuna got the spaceX experience.

Each time I see such natural phenomena a thought comes to my head:"We are just the guests on this planet".

Hi Jeff,

I am a volunteer with Shoalhaven Marine Rescue. There were some very strange currents in the Shoalhaven River at different places, other places were almost unaffected. If you have a look at the attached graph of River Heights at Greenwell Point issued by BOM, you can see that it is basically missing a high tide cycle late on Sunday night.

http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDN60234/IDN60234.568180.plt.shtml.

At about 8:30am Sunday Morning in Shores Creek (adjacent to Greenwell Point) where both Marine Rescue boats are moored and tide flow normally fairly minimal, the tide should have been running in and it was actually running out at 5 knots plus. Couldn't get either rescue boat alongside the wharf at Crookhaven Heads as the current just drove both boats sideways at 100mph, yet no problem at Greenwell Point Wharf. The pleasing thing was that no boats headed off shore from the Shoalhaven River, where there would normally be 12+ go out at this time of year. The sad thing was that 15+ boats went offshore from Batemans Bay, 10+ went offshore from Ulladalla and about 8 went offshore from Jervis Bay.

Cheers

Was snorkelling on a reef in Vanuatu when the Solomen island tsunami came in , it was small yet no one had an idea it was coming , the water became quite murky and small waves broke across the reef , the boats owner was pacing the dock when we returned.

A friend was shopping in town when a siren went off , he noticed a couple of shops shut up real quick but by and large no one batted an eyelid so he kept shopping eventually he asked someone what the siren was for,,, tsunami warning he was told.

Mmm studying history tells me that most all civilization colapses can be traced to a volcanic eruption that has caused crop failures etc

Could this be the start of the end?

There is a compelling case that volcanic erruption was the underlying reason for the French Revolution (as one example of their impact) .. .they change the climate, food shortage occur, public servants don't come to work and things go down hill.

History repeats they say
