Hey there fellow Astro Nerds!

I am embarking on my editing journey and wanted to ask what others have experienced re CPU /RAM performance w/pixinsight. I have reviewed the pixinsight website and the recommended specs include some very serious and expensive kit!

So, how have others found performance with older CPUs ie i7 /32gig of RAM. I had hoped someone may have experience to share of old versus new-ish and can provide insight into comparative difference. Noted that the question is subjective and would depend on kit. Just looking for thoughts/ insights.

Thanks in advance.

8 year old i7 with 16GB - no issues whatsoever. Can take a while to crunch some things but it gets done. Just walk away, have a coffee, come back.

I am using and an old AMD FX8120 eight core processor with 16Gb of ram. This system is quite old now. I also converted my C drive to an SSD as well as my Astro drive which helps a bit and then use the Astro drive for swap file.

Same as Lewis, takes a bit on some processes, gives me the chance to go talk to the Minister of War, Finance and all Things Domestic.

What sort of data will you be processing most often? (camera, mono/OSC, file size)

I have a two year old Razer gaming laptop

10th Gen, 6 Core, 12 thread I7
32 Gb Ram
Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti GPU (PI will use this with the CPU)
1 Terabyte M2 SSD

1. Weighted Batch Preprocessing (Register, Align, Stack..) of say 100 ZWO 2600 MC 50 megabyte images takes around 5 minutes.
2. Star removal on the transformed image takes a few minutes
3. The actual operations like Noise removal, Curves, Colour Balance etc are near instantaneous

Thank you to everyone for your responses. I ended up getting a second hand Ryzen gaming desktop with loads of power. I appreciate your support!
