NGC1055 from the burbs

Hi

Here is an image of NGC1055 taken from the 'burbs in Melbourne.
About 400min total exposure with a GSO RC14 + ASI2600MC OSC camera all on an EQ8 mount.

Difficult to process as its a very 'dusty' looking galaxy and blends well into the light pollution... (see attached image flat fielded but with no light pollution correction).

It's amazing that you can get any signal from a Mag 11 target
in the city.

Great work Maurice. A tough subject from a light polluted sky and you tamed that adversity nicely. I'm particularly impressed by the detail you've captured in the galaxy and having searched the internet for other images of this object, yours stacks up admirably against ones taken with larger instruments and under darker skies I would assume. The only improvement I would make to this image is increase your levels in the histogram to the left. Your background is just a little too light and can afford a bit more density to your blacks without affecting the detail in the galaxy.

Really good result there Maurice, love the dusty detail in the plane of this galaxy, creates a nice 3D feel. Looks like you can get decent results despite being in LP Vill :thumbsup:

Thanks for your comments Michael.I have always been guilty of leaving backgrounds too light. I get worried that I might be losing details in the background if I go darker; but I guess that the S/N there is not good in any case...
