No Date code anymore it seems

Hi Guys it seems that the newer Canon L lenses have no date codes anymore, dose anyone know if this is correct please.

A mate of mine bought a brand new Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS USM mark 3 and there is no date stamp on the rear barrel as I would have expected.

So is this normal now, :)

They were changing it to be part of the serial number with the first 2 digits being the code for the year/month, but whether that continues I have no idea, been a few years since I purchased a new lens.
