Trouble for me with a 12" mak, is I'm almost certainly not going to be happy with a 16" dob... , 20" dob might be better...

Start small Col with this one: https://astromart.com/classifieds/astromart-classifieds/telescope-catadioptric/show/intes-micro-alter-m603-maksutov-cassegrain-520509 (be careful as seller has no ratings).

I'm not a Mak Cass guy, but if I was, I'd probably take the Intes over the APM irrespective of price. I've used a few Intes and Intes Micro scopes over the years and I haven't seen a bad one. I rate the 6" Intes MN61 Mak Newt as one of the best 6" telescopes ever produced. This also sold as the Orion Argonaut.

You could have bought the 10"/F14.5 Astrophysics Mak Cass for $EUR 18,000 (https://www.astro-physics.com/254f145mc) and its probably as good as it gets as far as Mak Cass's go, notwithstanding it has 2" less aperture than the other 2. No more new ones of those happening at this stage unfortunately.

Cheers

If you poke around on CN it appears someone has a 10” APM with Intes glass in Sydney, several pics of it.

But if you think that's eye-watering... try explaining this little APO to the Chief Financial Controller ...https://astromart.com/classifieds/astromart-classifieds/telescope-refractor/show/apm-lzos10f9-triplet-mw-folder-super-apo

I had a 10" Intes Deluxe for sale here last year which is now in Singapore because no one wanted it. Did (dumb predictive keypad...) a side by side drag race with that APM-Wirth Mak - both stupendous scopes. Real shame.

Do you still have the 9" Santel, Alex?

For what it's worth, a pic of the drag race & a Kremlin of 6 Maks all using Intes glass. Left to right: 2 6" Maks, the 10" APM-Wirth, another 6" (Deluxe) piggybacked onto the APM-Wirth, a 9" Santel and last the 10" Intes Deluxe. The APM & Santel both use Deluxe Intes optics.

Wowww!! I wish I was there. I didn't know there are so many Intes Maks in Sydney.

The night of the drag race was between the two 10" Maks & the 9" Santel. We fluked a night of extraordinary seeing. To make this as even a race as possible, the eyepieces we used were all interchanged between all three scopes. Most interesting out of this interchange was how individual eyepieces impart different hues to the image. It wasn't the scopes influencing colour but the eyepieces as the hue variations followed the eyepieces, not the scopes.

Mars was a couple of weeks out from opposition this night with Vallis Marineris in full view. OMG! The image looked like you could stick your finger down the gorge & feel all the ripples! In all the combined years of observing between the three of us we had NEVER seen Mars like this. The image of Mars we saw that night for me ranks along side my first view of Saturn. What these scopes can do in such a compact package is extraordinary.

There's a 16" Mak up for grabs too...
