Last night I whipped this up in about an hour and a half. Great fun!

If anyone would like one made up, I now have a couple of dozen squares of white laminated MDF (Craftwood) to make Hartman masks up to 300mm in diameter. PM me if you want one (small fee for Bazza's astrofunds plus postage) and I will be happy to custom make one to fit your scope.

Just to show that I'm not a profiteer, I will put the instructions on making the mask on the A.S.I.G.N. website under DIY projects.

Baz

That looks great, but I'm not so keen about the mask making contact with the SCT corrector plate or sitting inside the rim so close to the plate.

Do you make them so they affix to the outside diameter of the OTA, rather than sit inside the corrector rim?

That's one sturdy mask, Baz

Paul wrote an in-depth Hartman Mask article here (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.php?id=63,187,0,0,1,0), if you want to know more.

Dude, I can make the mask sit anywhere you like. I just put it there because it is squarely supported on the corrector plate clamp rim, and because of the screws holding that rim on, the mask actually sits about 6mm off the glass anyway.

But to answer your question, it can be made to sit inside the tube, but right at the end by fixing 3 little tabs to the front of the mask, stopping it from going any further down the tube. The alternative, is to make it the same diameter as the outside of the tube and put a rim around it to fit over the end of the tube.

Good stuff there Baz.
I made one just last week out of 3mm mdf sheet the same way and works great to get focus through the 350d.
The only extra thing i did was glued three bits of 1/2" foam rubber to it so it will sit snuggly on the end of the tube.;)

Here is a pic of my rubber bits.
Yes, and don't forget to remove it after getting focus as i have done more than a few times during long exposures.

Thanks for the welcome Matt, Ron (waitin' to see this new pier:shrug: ), David and Br'er Bar'. Good to be on here. How can I resist when I discover how much fun you guys are having?

As to talking funny, Baz, I know that tail wags both ways (No offense meant, Ron). Still, some of us Yanks can't resist putting a shot 'cross the bows of our southern brothers, all in good fun. You know, "No shot too cheap, no blow too low".

I really am pleased to hook up with you crew, and look forward to exchanging with you. Was it Crocodile Dundee who said a fella can't have too many mates?

Cheers, and CDS!

Bob

That's my point, Ron. "...pork choply..."? Some kind Oz wordsmith really should come up with a glossary of expressions from "upsidedownland" so we unliterated "upsiders" can follow the bouncing ball with you bunch. Barry made an effort to get me started awhile back, but I can see the road is long and winding...like learning an ancient tongue.

Cheers and grins!
