Reckon I’ve snapped my best Jupiter last night!

After an extremely frustrating couple of nights trying to grab some planets in what should have been good seeing, and only getting flat, soft results and some weird artefacts on processing- it finally dawned on me I haven’t checked the collimation of my scope for a couple weeks. Low and behold it was substantially out for some reason :screwy: so after giving myself a few verbal kicks up the butt got it adjusted. TAKE 2 - and looks like just in time for some really good seeing - probably the best I’ve had this year. I’ve got a stack of data to process from a good window of about 1hr but here’s the first one out.

Really pleased how it came out- and can spot some features I’ve never noticed before. A new one for me were the 5 small and 1 larger blue storm circles in the southern equatorial band just east of the GRS. Not showing the best on the downsized version tho…

Thanks for looking

Excellent result Dave, you seem to have sorted out the minor bugs. Have to ask though, why would the scope go out of collimation if being treated gently.
Nice detail coming out in the image and pleasant processing too.

Thanks mate. Yeah that was my question too. Not like I’ve been on the road anywhere and certainly hasn’t been dropped or anything. I can only assume the corrector plate shifted slightly when taking scope on and off when that cold front came through the other day. Was gunna blame the Melbourne earthquake but…

In the end, I’m actually glad it was out by enough to get me attention to fix it properly. Lesson learned now I’ll do a quick check every night

So good mate.:thumbsup::thumbsup: I was out doing the same thing. The seeing was pretty decent. But my video streams stuffed up somehow. Trying to figure out what happened. Only on Jupiter though. Trying again tonight but it's not as good as yesterday.

Thanks Dunk - yeah really happy how it came out.

Thanks Marc - yes last night didn’t seem to produce nearly the same results for me either. It’s frustrating when the equipment doesn’t behave!

Been working through some of the best data from the other night - and put through PIPP to animate. Total of 18 shots over approx 1:45hrs with the second half conditions gradually deteriorating.

Was having trouble getting consistent colour balance as it seemed to shift during the session for some reason (seeing? dew? moon glow?). Had a bit of a play with the saturation / rgb balance - not sure if I actually ended up improving it or making it worse tbh ...

Had to down-scale it a craazy amount to upload but here a link to the full version as well (https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArpSiLT3VkGHiPEcq5T-TgR4ohp_lQ?e=Ms8ddL). Also added the best single frames.

Lock-down's coming to an end in next few weeks so might be my last good shots for the season.

Thanks for looking!!

Rippa tom bowler shots Dave!

The red spot has proven to be elusive this season for me- still hunting the phase. Good to see the animation too- I agree the colour balancing can be fickle over the course of the nights imaging : perhaps atmospheric conditions changing as it rises higher playing havoc?

Beautiful animation, would be nice to see it slowed down a bit, but excellent work none the less.

Thanks for the comments folks!

Jeff-pretty easy to re-do a slower version, so I added the link here! (https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArpSiLT3VkGHiPEdasWCS4Fj-S1Nfw?e=BMOqSC) Bit more lumpy when you slow it down as you can see I did a few captures in quick succession in the 5min when the seeing was spectacular and then about one every 5min after that. Darn meridian flip in the middle of it too!!

Thanks Anth- yeah that's the best one I got of the GRS this year. I was a bit torn as I really wanted to chuck the binos on as well so did that just after I finished the captures I uploaded here!

Cheers Marc- a couple of your hints about the AS!3 processing parameters helped speed up the processing a bit actually. My poor 10yr old Microsoft Surface almost had smoke coming out of it...

Same here. Everything counts. Limiting the ROI during stacking and checking the "remember settings" checkbox seem to ease the pain as well.
