So, if we were in space travelling towards this nebula would we see these colors with our eyes, or would it be more like a smokey smear like we see through an eyepiece?

Now now Mark, drinking whilst scoping, hope is was single malt...

Good question about what we would see.
My guess is probably very subtle colours, it is the long exposures that really bring out the strong vibrancy.
