Hi, are estimates of the Number of Amateur Astronomers world wide out there.

Am discussing on My Facebook Page what is wrong with the flat earth Theory with a man who believes this lie.

Keep telling him that Amateur Astronomy people see South Pole of Mars, etc. And it does not fall off. But it does not get through to him.

The Bible warns of BLIND LEADING THE BLIND, Matthew 15:14, etc. so am addressing this issue on Facebook.

To be honest John, don't waste your breath... No matter what facts you present you will not change his mind... I guarantee that!! They are so invested in their belief in a flat earth they will never walk back on the theory for fear of looking foolish... It's quite sad really

Yes Agree, but others reading their posts may be tricked into also accepting this error, which is why I do bother answering them.

My facebook page has a lot of Activity. My name is John Fry listed at Nimbin, my closest town. And I cant keep up with the Posts on my Page.

Do not stop anyone from joining it, BUT only stop PORN and Naked ladies on my page.

So their is discussion of alsorts of stuff, Health, New world Order, etc.

But I tell people expect their wrong views to be challenged.

As to the number of amateur astronomers, a bloody lot, IMO way to many and yet not one has got a descent picture of a UFO, such as waste :) :)

The Earth is flat just look outside ...flat isnt it? its the planet that is a globe, more or less. Actually its not flat as there are lots of hills...but on the flat parts its flat.
I suspect flat Earthers are seeking what most folk seek by indulging outrageous behaviour or expression and that is some form of attention. Give them attention and make their day...

At least when we meewt up tell your veiw to me. Should be Going to Casino 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month -- not this long WEekend. Was thinking to bring along my sleeping bag next time, and hitch to Tabulum and camp out and ring you next morning. Normally would be hitchhiking home instead.

Sure.... Well at the very least it would be equal to the number of IIS members, Cloudy Nights, members and similar organisations etc, etc... and then perhaps scaled up to world population from their local member populations.

Simplifying somewhat and taking the proportion of Astronomers in the local population from only Australian numbers from IIS

If for a moment on something of a whim we take say IIS as representative of Astronomers in Australia ( I know it may not count specifically any Academics, won't count people off the grid, and may count some overseas members, etc, etc...) but at least it's some sort of number, then .....

IIS Members = 18,514 Members + 114 Guests as of right now 11:50am 10JUN2021
Australian Population = ~ 25.4 Million
World Population = ~7.8 Billion

By that the proportion of Astronomers in the Australian Population is (18,514 + 114) / 25,400,000 = ~0.073%

If the Australian proportion of Astronomers is representative of the rest of the world then we have something like 0.073% of 7.8 Billion Astronomers = ~ 5.7 Million Astronomers/Astro-photographers Worldwide. Call it 6 Million or NOT :D:D:D

When yo discuss garbage like flat earth with flat earthers you are giving them legitimacy because they then believe they have a point of view. You will not change their mind no matter what anyone tells you so it's best to shut them down and ignore or even block them. when they are ignored enough by everyone they will change their tune as they have no legitimacy. (some are such zealots they are deluded however)
