I have the second edition and the third edition. Both were really great books.
Though I don't really think I can justify buying the fourth edition too, given I'm unlikely to upgrade anything I have.

Is there a big difference in content between 2nd and 3rd editions? I've got 3rd edition, but really not sure if 4th would be significantly better to justify the purchase.

There was a big difference between those two editions because GOTO telescopes and digital photography came along as big things.
But now, I don't recollect as big a jump as that happening since the third edition came out.

I am biased because Alan is a good friend - but the 3rd edition came out ~10 years ago. I'm not sure it's a book to 'upgrade' however it's perhaps the best single 'I'm seriously interested in astronomy' book money can buy.

Agreed.
Until the third edition came out, the second edition was perhaps the single best 'I'm seriously interested in astronomy' book money can buy".
I suspect that the fourth edition will definitely take that place among newer amateur and recreational astronomers
Cheers,
Renato
