Imaged M46 and the bright planetary NGC 2438, also the fainter M1-18.
8 x 10 mins ISO 800, EOS Ra, 10 inch scope hand guided as usual. Good seeing, full res image here. Taken last night

Well done Scott, excuse my ignorance but what is hand guiding?

Scott is our resident human autoguider.
He manually guides his scope. :eyepop:

Fantastic work Scott.

Nice catch

After a few crownies I do multi star manual guiding. I'll even throw some dithering in there. Mate rates.

Another couple of lovely handmade images Scott, nice work as usual.

Try stretching your data and see if you can see any trace of the veeery faint protoplanetary Calabash nebula (https://pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/154070429/original) near NGC 2438, neither of which are actually in M46 :)

Wow, so thats what that red bit of nebulosity is, I thought it might have just been a bit of outlying nebulosity from NGC 2438. I didn't realize it is a separate object and a protoplanetary! Thanks for letting me know. Here is a stretched close up, the Calabash Nebula is near top of image.

Im amazed I picked it up in 80 minutes from light polluted Newcastle with my setup, though no chance of getting those outer faint rings around 2438 so well shown in your deep image Mike.
