Saturday 13th March.

Just the one, lonely, small spot. (2808).

I used a Vixen, 4" with 25mm EP, solar projecting onto the ceiling of my carport. Rather primitive, but effective.

Number was found via the NASA site: https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/sunspots/

Clouded out down here, 18mm over night, and now we have the wind.....

15th March, 2021.

A new Region appeared today:2809. It seems to be one small spot, with 2 tiny spots nearby. The tiny spots are so close together that appear more as a streak.

Region 2808 is still shown on the charts, but I saw nothing.

16th March.

I saw nothing today.

The Nasa website only shows Region 2808, whereas the other two websites also show Region 2809.

17th March. 16.50 EAST.

I saw a new spot just in from the Eastern Limb: 2810.

2808 & 2809 are still chartered, but I did not notice any activity there.

Looked promising down here earlier, but the high cloud and absolutely rubbish seeing, put the scope back in the office!

18th March. 7.30am EAST.

Region 2810 near the Eastern Limb is putting on a fine display with several large White Spots adjacent to the dark Sunspot.

March 19: 5.10pm EAST.

There are 3 spots visible in Region 2810. One is small, the other two are tiny. I saw vague white patches in the area.

Today, I solar projected with a Vixen 81mm ED and a 30mm EP.

I have seen no spots for the last 3 days, which is spoiling my fun.

Tropo-Bob

March 23rd. 8.05am.

Two small spots have appeared near the Eastern Limb, designated as Region 2811. Broad white areas can be seen nearby.

81mm ED Vixen, used for solar projection.

March 24th: 9.11am EAST.

A larger new spot with a semicircular white area nearby appeared today near the Eastern Limb: Region 2812.

The two spots from yesterday (Region 2811) are still visible, though they have moved further away from the Eastern Limb. The associated, white regions that were visible yda have disappeared.

Finally got about 14.5 minutes between cloud this morning to image the Sun.
Lost a lot of data due to cloud......
Was good to be back in the saddle albeit only for a few minutes!

28th March: 9.35am EAST.

Just the one spot, medium sized and located on the northern side of mid-disc: Region 2812.

I finally had a break in the weather. It has been terrible here for the last few days during the early morning and late afternoons, which is generally when I do my solar projections.

March 29th: 8.35am EAST.

The medium sized spot (Region 2812) has moved to just inside the western hemisphere of the solar disc. Otherwise it looks much the same as yda.

The NASA website indicates a small/tiny spot nearby, but I did not see it.

I dusted off and checked my white light filters today. They have not seen daylight for some years.

A quick check of the Sun. Region 2812 appeared as two small and faint dots adjacent to each other. They were easily missed if not accurately focused.

March 31st :8.30am EAST.

I saw no spots, but did notice a white region on the north-western limb.

Good to hear Steve. Looks like we have the North and the South of the country covered.

I was inspired to take a photo with an old smartphone (with visual aperture filter) and then enlarge the appropriate part. (It's better to look at the enlargement first.)

(Ha, since doing this, I see the The Sun Now image has been updated and it shows it better. However, before I did this mornings observation, the Sun Now image was an older one showing no spots.)

Jumping Jupiters!! There are lots of spots today: 5 mediums, many small.

Today is the first day that I have seen proper sunlight since the 18th.

So,

27th April 10.00am EAST: Many spots in one broad area. They have been split thought into Regions 2818, 2820 & 2821.

Tropo-Bob
28-04-2021, 08:36 AM
28th Apr 8.30am EAST: 4 medium sized spots (although 2 of these spots look to be doubles) plus lots of smaller spots. Still the same Regions as yda, but they have moved further to the west.

Tropo-Bob
01-05-2021, 08:47 AM

I am not sure to which Region the Spot belongs.

Tropo-Bob
02-05-2021, 08:45 AM
May 2nd 8.30am EAST: No spots, but I saw an slight unevenness it the brightness of the solar disc over a broad area well inwards from the South-Eastern Limb.

Anybody else still do solar projections or am I the last projectionist?

Merlin66

Bob,
Thanks for the report.
At the moment the sun is being projected on a full cloud covered sky.;)

I think with the availability of Baader Solar filters and good Herschel wedges projecting the solar disk has lost some of its majic.
I used to use projection back in the '60s, but not recently.

Tropo-Bob

Yes, I have tried all them, but still remain attached to projecting.

09-05-2021, 08:46 AM
9th May 8.35am: Region 2822 has developed into an attractive group with 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small spot. There are also several white areas visible. The area has move a little further from the Eastern Limb, but is still close to the Limb.

Mothers Day commitments puts me out of action today...
Space weather say seven (!!) spots in the new AR 2822.

Tropo-Bob
11-05-2021, 11:41 AM
11th May 11.25am: Two active Regions today. AR2822 has moved towards the center and a new Region, AR2823 has appeared to the south of 2822 and a bit closer to the Eastern Limb.

Tropo-Bob
12-05-2021, 08:50 AM
12th May 8:45AM: AR2822 has developed into a very prominent region.

Unfortunately, I can not say anything more as I was looking through far too much cloud that just would not go away.

Tropo-Bob
13-05-2021, 09:32 AM
13th May, 8:40am. Both regions (2822 & 2823) are still visible. 2822 contains a large spot with several smaller, nearby spots and is quite attractive.

Both Regions are nearing the center and will soon cross over from the Eastern hemisphere to the Western.

Tropo-Bob
14-05-2021, 08:36 AM
14th May 8.30am: Region 2822 is similar to yesterday and is well worth having a gander at.

The sole spot in Region 2823 appears to have shrunk, although it has a very dark center.

Tropo-Bob
15-05-2021, 08:30 AM
15 May 8.25am: Region 2822 still has one medium sized spot visible, although it seems to be fading fast. The Region is in the north on the Western hemisphere.

I could not locate anything of Region 2823.

Tropo-Bob
16-05-2021, 09:37 AM
16th May, 8.45am: Region 2822 has moved further rest and I am wondering if it will move to the far side, rather than just disappearing.

Today, it looked like two equal sized, very close spots.

Tropo-Bob
17-05-2021, 08:37 AM
17th May 8.30am: Region 2822 is now closing onto the Sun's Western Limb. Though distinct, there appears to me to be only one spot, although it is rather blurry. There were hints of white areas nearby, but they were very vague.

Tropo-Bob

Enjoying the daily reports Tropo.
And a new spot coming around the NE limb, will have to get back into solar imaging soon. Enjoying everyones' postings of the recent activity even if not posting comments, been very busy moving digs and sussing out the new locale to set up in daylight.

Tropo-Bob
19-05-2021, 09:59 AM
Thanks Jeff and I see the new spot that U mentioned!

19th May 9.20am: A new, medium sized spot has appeared in the East and named as Region 2824.

I can no longer see Region 2822 in the West, but I was hampered by cloud. The best that I can say is that if it is there, it has faded significantly.

Tropo-Bob
23-05-2021, 08:48 AM
23rd May, 8.45am: I can now see 3 tiny spots near the very large spot in Region 2824.

Tinderboxsky
23-05-2021, 01:57 PM
My first white light observation of the Sun for a very long time.

The central area of 2824 appeared irregular in shape. It looked like a jellyfish with short trailing tentacles. Intricate faculae lacework surrounded the “jellyfish” and arranged around this were four groupings of tiny dark spots. On close inspection one of these small spots comprised of four tiny in-line specs and another resolved as two distinct tiny spots.

Midday today with 140mm refractor stopped down to 125mm with a Baader solar film filter.

Tropo-Bob
25-05-2021, 08:30 AM
25th May 8.25am: Region 2824 has moved well away from the Suns eastern limb. The very large Spot seems to have a line of very tiny spots on each side of it.

Tropo-Bob
28-05-2021, 08:39 AM
28th May, 8.30am. Lots of spots near the North West limb. Region 2824 has moved close to the western limb since my last observation (its been wet here) and is being accompanied by a new region, 2826.

Tropo-Bob
29-05-2021, 08:34 AM
29th May, 8.25am: Just the 2 spot left near the Western Limb. They are surrounded by a large number of white areas. I think this is Region 2824, but am not sure.

Tropo-Bob
31-05-2021, 07:46 AM
31st May. 7.40am. A new group of Spots has appeared. I large, 1 medium and one rather diffuse spot that looks to be more than just a tiny spot. It has been named 2825 and is well in from the Eastern Limb.

Tropo-Bob
01-06-2021, 08:37 AM
1st June, 8.30am: Trialing of to the East from the two main spots is a line of numerous small spots.

Looks like I have the name wrong yesterday, this is Region 2827, not 2825.

Tropo-Bob
02-06-2021, 08:13 AM
2nd June, 8.10am: One large spot near the center of the disc. It seems like it has almost absorbed the previously nearby, medium sized spot.

There were hints of detail nearby, which I guess is a number of very tiny spots.

Tropo-Bob
03-06-2021, 07:56 AM
3rd June, 7.50am. A new, small spot has appeared in the South, in from the Eastern Limb. It is currently unnamed.

Region 2827 now is in the Western Hemisphere and has one very large spot, with a number of tiny spots that trial off to the East.

Tropo-Bob
04-06-2021, 08:36 AM
4th June: 8.30am. Yesterday's new spot has become Region 2829 and has become a pair of spots, close together.

Region 2827 is largely unchanged, except for moving a little further west.

Apparently, there is a Region 2828 somewhere, but I see no indication of it in white light.

Tropo-Bob
05-06-2021, 08:16 AM
5th June 8.05am: The pair of spots in region 2829 is now accompanied by a number of tiny spots to the East and North East.

Region 2827 is one large spot with a medium sized spot nearby. The other tiny spots that trialed off to the East have disappeared from my view.

Tropo-Bob
06-06-2021, 08:50 AM
6th June, 8.45am.

Region 2827 is losing definition as it moves close to the Sun's Western Limb. I can only see the one large spot.

Region 2829 is much the same as yesterday, except the fine spots seem to be just a regional darkling rather than individual spots being visible. I have my suspicions about the correctness of this observation, so would not swear to it. :(

Tropo-Bob
08-06-2021, 08:43 AM
8th June, 8.30am. Region 2829 has bloomed into a very interesting array of 2 medium spots and 4 or more small spots on the Western Side (opposite to previously.)

Region 2827 is just the one medium spot that is closing in on the Sun's Western Limb.

Tropo-Bob
09-06-2021, 02:47 PM
9th June: 8.20am. Region 2829 has shrunk to just the 2 medium spots, whilst Region 2827 has disappeared (probably behind the Sun's Western Limb).

Tropo-Bob
10-06-2021, 08:05 AM
10th June, 800am. A new region consisting of 2 small spots has appeared in the North, about half way across the Sum's disc. It has not been yet given a region number.

Region 2929 is moving further west and now shows only two, rather diffuse looking spots, however, they are accompanied by quite large white regions (ok, what the proper name for these?), which is surprising since it is still somewhat distant from the Sun's Western Limb.

Tropo-Bob
14-06-2021, 09:33 AM

17-06-2021, 07:47 AM
17th June, 7.35am. Just the one large, dark spot surrounded by a well-defined penumbra. Region 2833 is near the center of the Sun's Eastern Hemisphere.

Tropo-Bob
18-06-2021, 08:02 AM
18th June, 7.50am: Still just the one large spot. The Spot's Umbra seems to have largely taken over the penumbra that was well defined yesterday and this makes the spot look larger and darker, but also leaves it looking somewhat ill defined.

Tropo-Bob
19-06-2021, 08:02 AM
19th June, 8.00am. Just the one, large blurry looking spot. There has been little change since yesterday.

22-06-2021, 08:52 AM
21st June, 8.40am. The large spot has returned to having a well-defined umbra. I thought I saw a tiny spot nearby, but it was at the edge of my capacity to see it.

Region 2833 is now located about half way across the Sun's Western Hemisphere.

Tropo-Bob

We were fogged and clouded out until late morning.
Certainly an impressive group.

Tropo-Bob
29-06-2021, 09:08 AM
29th June, 8.55 am.

Lots of spots today. Region 2835 has it two spots that a jointly surrounded by a common umbra. There is a line of small spots out to these spots. It looks both strange and attractive.

Region 2836 is more clearly developed today.

Conditions were difficult today with only momentary glimpses through clouds, but it is the most activity that I have seen in a while, so well worth looking at if readers have an opportunity.

Tropo-Bob
02-07-2021, 08:38 AM
2nd July, 8.30am.

Region 2835 has a huge, dark spot surrounded by a very large, lopsided umbra. There are two small spots nearby with either some tiny spots or an unattached area of only umbra. It all makes for very attractive viewing in white light.

Region 2836 is barely hanging on with just one small spot. Both of these regions are now in the West,

On the Eastern Side, Region 2837 has a few small spots.

Tropo-Bob
03-07-2021, 08:36 AM
3rd July, 8.30am.

Region 2835 is still a large spot surrounded by an impressive amount of umbra. There may be some tiny spots in the umbra, but otherwise no other spots are left in 2835.

Region 2836 still has only the one small spot.

2837 has 3 small spots, two of which are close together.

Tropo-Bob
04-07-2021, 09:17 AM

The large spot in 2835 continues to put on a fine show despite approaching the Sun's Western Limb.

2837 has only two spots that I can see today.

Good to hear from U Ken. I do admire your solar images.

Thursday, 15th July, 9.05am.

Still just the one spot, Region 2842, on the Eastern Side of the Sun. There are two spots on the Western Side, but I could not see them by solar projection.

Today, I received a Orion Solar filter to fit my Vixen 81mm ED and did see the two spots to the west using 52x. I could also see a small umbra surrounding the spot in 2842.

The solar filter was still too bright for my taste, so I tried it with various coloured filters. The view improved with both the Green 56 and the Yellow 12, however, I am likely to just use the green filter from now on. It felt the most relaxing on the eye, and IMO improved the view, but perhaps not as improved as the Yellow 12. Its like splitting straws, really.

Merlin66

Bob,
Using the green filter gives a bit more contrast and the sensitivity of the eye is greater in the green, improving the perception.

Friday, 16th July,2021. 7.50am.

The one spot of Region 2842 looks unchanged. (Solar Projection)

Through the Vixen 81mm, a small umbra was still visible. The other two spots seen yda have disappeared. (using 42x, a solar filter and a green filter). I am finding that the solar image is clearer at 42x than 52x.

Now that I have a solar filter, I am planning to take a photo or two when interesting features appear. Is there any filter that is advisable to use when taking 'white'-light images?

Thanks Ken,

I guess that is why Moon filters are normally green. :)

Bob,
Basically the set-up you have - Solar film filter with a secondary green filter would be a good starting point for WL imaging.
What camera did you have in mind??

Saturday, 17th July, 7.45am.

Region 2842 now has a much-smaller, secondary spot. I could see a small umbra around each spot when viewing with the Solar filter.

My observations are becoming earlier, because a neighbour has cut down a tree. The downside of earlier viewing is that the seeing is not good and thus, the Solar edge boiled. Hmm, I may have to be a bit more patient in future. Then again, some days, I need to take the first chance to view, as it quickly becomes cloudy and I may not see the Sun for the rest of the day.

Hi Ken,

I have a Cannon EOS M50 mirrorless camera. I tried some shots yda, but they did not turn out well, as I had problem with both the focusing and disturbing the camera when I took the image. Nevertheless, thanks for the tip about the green filter. I will keep working on it.

Sunday 18th July,8.30am:

There is new activity with a region appearing in the center of the Solar Disc. There is a large spot, a medium spot and a semicircle of small spots.

Region 2842 is still developing with the appearance of several small spots to near the existing large and medium sized spots.

Yesterday, during a later look, I was able to see a small spot and some faculae near a polar region, so at an unusually high latitude. I can not see it today, but the website: Solar Weather Sunspots shows it as Region 2844.

Region 2842 is still prominent as a region of 3 medium spots that form a rectangle triangle. Yesterday's new region 2845 seems to have faded to one medium spot. (EP projection only - late start because of clouds.)

I have commenced taking photos with my Canon M50 and they can be seen in the Images Heading, under Solar System.

Breaking News!!! There are 5 Regions with sunspots visible on the solar disc.

With solar projection, I could only see 4 of them. However, the solar edges were very unsteady in the early morning seeing.

I have taken the SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) picture and edited it to just show the sunspots. I hope to take my own image later in the day.

(Mods: I have edited these 2 images so that they are less the 5KB combined. I hope this is acceptable: I know that images are normally discouraged in this part of the forum).

Three Regions, but only 4 spots visible today, as seen in Paul's much appreciated image from yesterday.

The new Region with two spots is 2895.

I looked directly at the Sun today with my Vixen 80mm ED & solar filter. Region 2894 has three spots, one medium, two small and they are surrounded by a common umbra. I had been calling this as just one large spot.

Region 2893 is now close to the Sun's Western Limb and Region 2895 continues to fade.

Region 2894 is now the only active region in white light. It has some extra spots, one being medium and two are tiny. Yesterday's 3 spots are still surrounded by a common umbra, but two of those have become darker and with a casual glance, they look like they are only one spot.

There has been some shape changing in Region 2894. It now consists of two medium, equal sized spots, which are surrounded by a common umbra. The small spots, which were nearby, have all disappeared.

There are two new regions in the East with one spot each. Region 2896 has the larger spot, the other region has yet to be named on Space Weather.

Faculae are now visible in Region 2894 as it approaches the Sun's Western Limb.

Region 2896 has one large spot, which when observed at 73x with a solar filter, the spot appears to be two spots close together.

Yesterday's new Region has been designated 2897 and features just the one spot.

There's a couple of very tight and crisp large filaments (and a neat filaprom) easily visible at the moment - in both CaK (:eyepop:most unusual) and H alpha.

There are two new regions today. Region 2900, which consists of 3 or 4 very close spots, is not far from the Region mentioned yesterday. I glimpsed some faculae near the limb, but no sunspots. However, I see this has been named as Region 2899.

Region 2998 has lost a few spots, but the remaining 5 or 6 spots seemed to have darkened and become a little larger.

Both Region 2900 & 2898 look more developed than yda, but appear remarkably similar to each other. They both have a well developed spot, with a nearby spot on the end of a hook-shaped chain of many small/tiny spots.

Region 2899 still only has faculae, which is more easily seen today.

November 29th , 8.00am.

New Region 2901 with one small spot has appeared near the Sun’s Eastern Limb.

Regions 2898 & 2900 continue to show significant changes every day, as they begin their approach to the Sun’s Western Limb.

Today, my viewing circumstances were a bit on the weird side. When a small break in the clouds occurred, it was still raining. Nevertheless, I used my 80mm scope in the shelter of a carport and was still able to see detail, even though I was observing through a sun-shower.

Four Regions with spots are visible today.

A new spot has appeared towards the center of the solar disc and this has yet to be named on ‘Space Weather.’

Yesterday’s new Region 2901 continues to feature only one spot. Regions 2898 and 2900 have one large spot and several smaller spots. Region 2900 is closest to the Sun’s Western Limb.

Yesterday’s new Region (still un-named on Space Weather) has developed into 2 medium sized spots, accompanied by a few small spots.

Region 2898 & 2900 seem to be merging as they approach the Western Limb. There are 3 large spots, some small/tiny spots and a minor amount of faculae.

The one, small spot in Region 2901 looks fainter today and looks to be at risk of disappearing.

December 2nd, 8.50am.

Region 2902 (finally named) consists of at least 8 spots (4 medium, in two pairs and four small) and is located towards the center of the Solar disc.

Region 2900 is very near the Western Limb and Region 2898 appears to be part of the same region because of distortion affects near the edge of the Sun's globe. There is now an abundant amount of faculae nearby.

That is all I saw, but the Space Weather SDO image shows additional Regions 2901 & 2903, each with one faint, small spot.

Thanks Sam.

Only two Regions are visible today. One of the formerly, larger spots from 2898 is hard up against the Sun's Western Limb. There is much faculae along with the general solar surface looking a dirty brown.

Region 2902 now consists of 2 small/medium spots, along with several tiny spots.

There are 3 Regions visible today. New Region 2907 is on the Eastern edge and is one tiny spot, and faculae. The other new Region 2906 is further from the Eastern edge and is just one small spot, or it may have been a double spot. I could not see clearly because of its smallness and the early morning seeing.

Region 2905 is unchanged from yesterday with one small and one tiny spot.

All of this was observed directly (with filter), as they did not show with solar projection.

There has been interesting developments since yesterday.

Region 2907 has an array of small and tiny spots. I counted 8. Nearby, but closer to the Eastern Limb, there are two addition spots and faculae. I suspect that this will be numbered as a separate Region.

Region 2906 has developed a medium/large spot and is accompanied by one small and one tiny spot.

Region 2905 has just the one small spot.

I counted 26 spots this morning, five of which are medium sized. There are many spots trailing of towards the Eastern Limb from Region 2907 and these have been designated as Regions 2908 & 2909.

Region 2906 is still featuring and contained six of those spots; one medium sized with umbra.

Region 2905 still shows with tiny spots on the SDO image, but I could not see it.

There are 6 Regions visible today and with so many spots, that it is sometimes difficult to know where are the Region's boundaries. Its a nice problem to have compared to a week ago, when no spots were visible.

Yesterday's two new Regions have been designated as 2910 & 2911.

Yesterday afternoon's small spot has been named as Region 2912.

Region 2910 has reappeared with one small and one tiny spot.

There are currently 7 Regions with spots visible. There is also a small spot, well east of Region 2909, which I expect to also be named as a new Region. If so, then that makes 8 Regions visible. Even 7 Regions is more than I have seen before.

December 22nd, 8.20am.

New Region 2915 has burst forth in the East with a pair of moderate sized spots. Region 2916 is a singular spot, which has just rotated past the Eastern Limb. In contrast, Region 2910 has disappeared beyond the Western Limb.

Regions 2907, 08,09 11 & 12 still feature. The line of 2907,08 & 09 has many spots and is particularly interesting.

The SDO image (at Space Weather) showed two other tiny spots, which had Regional names 2913 & 2914, but I did not see them.

Tropo-Bob
23-12-2021, 08:13 AM

Region 2916 is a little further from the limb today. It has faculae along with 2 spots, one of which is very dark and interesting.

There is a solo spot that is sufficiently distanced from Region 2912 to be named as its own Region. Similarly, there are 4 spots east of Region 2915.

I could see spots in 7 named Regions and expect 2 more Regions to be soon named. That's a new record for my viewing.

UPDATE at 7.15am: I see that the new Regions have now been designated as 2917 & 2918. Furthermore, Regions 2913 & 14 which I could not find yesterday, have now disappeared of the SDO image on Space Weather.

There are still nine named regions with spots.

The view of Region 2916 improves every day as it rotates away from the Eastern edge to give a more face-on view. Alternatively, Regions 2907 & 2908 would be loosing their luster as they move towards the Western Limb, except for faculae now being visible.

The most endangered Region is 2911 with just the one small spot that seems to be fading away.

Christmas, 9.00am.

Region 2916 is putting on a fine show in the East. There are 8 regions with spots today. Region 2911 is gone from my sight.

Regions 2907 & 08 are on the Western Limb and have lost most of their glory. There is faculae in the area, but interestingly, the other photosphere in the general area looks dirty or slightly muddy.

Region 2916 becomes more impressive every day. I counted 6 spots and there is large amount of umbra surrounding the spots.

I saw 11 spots in Region 2918, but they were much smaller than those previously mentioned.

Region 2912 has four small spots.

New Region 2919 on the Eastern Edge has just one small spot.

Region 2916 still dominates with three large spots, of which two are close 'double' spots. I could also see Region 2919 with just one small spot.

I could not see the tiny spot associated with Region 2918 or anything of the Region 2921. Both Regions are show on the SDO image near the Western Limb.

Happy New Year, 8.35am.

New Region 2922 has appeared with one medium and one small spot, in the Sun's south-eastern quarter.

Region 2916 continues to dominate as it approaches the Sun's Western Limb. There are two small spots located to the south of 2916 and I think this will be named as a new Region.

There is much faculae on the North-Eastern Limb, which belong to Region 2918.

Region 2919 still shows, be it with just, the one tiny spot.

The three large spots of Region 2916 are losing their luster as they approach the Sun's Western Limb.

Yesterdays, new, unnamed Region has been designated as 2923, but the two spots have disappeared and only faculae is visible near the Western Limb. Much further North, faculae from 2918 is also visible.

Region 2922 has developed ever so slightly with one tiny spot more than yda, so currently one small and two tiny spots.
