Ron, Come on , I honestly dont know what it is, I was hoping somebody was going to say its an internal reflection, ... Its an under exposed/ mutilated collection of images...:D
I goofed got all my proccesing procedures arse about face. This learning is fun though, this system could reveal results , if only I knew how to drive it...

I need a live in Guru, for about a year I think Ron, i built this thing installed all this stuff, It all works how its supposed to , but the operator is cranially challenged...
The only reason I know this is Leo because by fluke the scope was pionting at it, I was playing with the Guide scope, and fired off the wrong camera, thought Ill take a few more of that thingo, combined them , got my darks and biases confused, had real trouble with the Raws, software speaking. Was going to keep taking images but the clouds came over, and the moon was giving me the willies...So I called it a nite...I had not set the scope up so I had no idea where is was pionting , except for leo...You gotta laugh...

Mate, as long as you're having fun
I'm not starting my astrophotography until 2008, because I [a] need to improve my equipment and [b] learn the sky better.

Run Leap hurdle and skydive, all before you crawl...:D
Whahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D  ;) Looks like you have a internal galaxy in your equipment.
I am jealous, give it to me pls.
All joking aside , it does look like an galaxy.
However, i have had that kind of picture too in registax and that happened when i substracted a darkframe.
So if you are using registax then something like this could happen.
Or it is a nice way of registax to tell you that you have done something wrong.
? darks from my flats ? Aren't you supposed to substract the darks and the flats from the image files?
I just begun imaging but that is the way i have been told to do it.
Shawn

Visually I couldnt see it, but it does look like a galaxy with a satelite. i didnt use registax, all the images were combined in Maxim, there are cloud lanes in it, I think. It probably looks completely different taken by someone that knows what they are doing...

So that is full frame with the 14"? One thing you might be able to try is take a heap more of them, and stack them, if you have in camera noise reduction use that too. would clean the image up quite a bit I reckon. you have a great tool at your disposal, cant wait to see what you can come up with next :)

It is indeed NGC4631 also known as the " Whale and Pup ".
Here's a pic I downloaded some time ago .... not sure who 's image it is. I think I may have found it in the galleries of Ritchey-Chretien Telescopes website but maybe not. Here's a link anyway .... there are lots of great images in the galleries.

Nothing to laugh about with that effort Shawn. Looks like you could do with a little more exposure, higher ISO or both. The 350D also has a setting which allows you to take Raw + jpg, if you intend using the RAW at a later date you will need to manually take a dark of the same exposure, as the in camera long exposure noise reduction is only applied to the JPG. If the 350D is anything like the 20D the long exposure noise reduction is in the custom functions menu.
