Looks like some clear nights coming up, pity about the full moon. What date would you like us at your place Alex? New moon is 17/5.

xelasnave
30-04-2007, 08:21 AM
Lets plan for that Glen.
With the air getting colder maybe we will get a clear dark night ..whatever they are.
The grounds are mowed if you want to have a tent.
alex

30-04-2007, 09:12 AM
If the weather is fine I will come up on Fri 18/5 and camp for 2 nights. Is that ok with you Alex?

I could be keen on this month at Alex's place. Just have a few
things to sort. My car is not very well at present, have picked
up another which is being worked on and will need to be reregistered.
I would also have my son Jake with me, we have a tent to stay in.
So it will depend on transport for us. Will let you know when it's
gets a lil closer.

regards,CS

xelasnave
04-05-2007, 11:21 AM
Rob you and your Son are most welcome. Good luck with the transport.
Maybe with things getting colder the weather may be better and push away the nasty (to us) stuff.

12-05-2007, 06:58 PM
You and yours are most welcome if you can accept the poverty of the people and the harseness of the land. There is always room for a tent, water and abush or two.
All we need is a clear night ..just once seems to be hard to get these days.
Nice day can be had down the forrest if you are into gems.. is work but a nice time usually with some small results.
I am digging out a fossilized tree in one spot close by.
alex
alex

CoombellKid
13-05-2007, 03:30 AM
jjjnettie,

I'll second Alex on that. You would be more than welcome to any of the
observing sessions down with us. There is room at any of the places
ie: Coombell, Tabulum or Casino to park your tent. At my place you can
have your own room, if you dont mind a billion kids toy's lol. It would be
most lovely to see you.

We're looking good here for this weekend at Alex weather permitting,
transport is sorted.

I'll see what I can organise for next month.

CoombellKid
14-05-2007, 05:57 PM
I think we willbe at Glen's next month @ north Casino, Not sure
if he'll let you fossick there :P but then again you would never
know what the contractors burried there

Glen, either night or both is good for me and Jake. We're free men :D

Might stay Sat & Sun night if Alex doesn't mind.

The proposed Richmond Valley Power Station could cause problems for us.
It will be about 1 km south of Casino airport. (lat -28.896, long 153.066)
They are drilling for gas about 5 km from here and had two very bright lights on at 4am this morning. I will write to the council about it today.
See: www.planning.nsw.gov.au/asp/pdf/mp_06_0217_preliminary_ea.pdf

glenc
17-05-2007, 06:41 AM
Friday night might be cloudy, so I will stay home.
Rob I suggest we meet at the railway crossing on the Bruxner Hwy in Casino on Saturday at 2:30pm. That is on the road to Tenterfield.
Is that OK with you Rob?
Alex is Sat night OK with you?

CoombellKid
17-05-2007, 08:04 AM
Wow! Casino getting a power station!! I think it's lights will be too far away
to bother us ouyt here in Coombell, it will just melt into the rest of Casino's
light dome. Which as you know is mostly hidhen by trees anyway.

The meeting spot sounds ok with me. Still I would like to head out there
Friday weather permitting. Does Alex have a map to his place? posted
anywhere.

Alex! are you about? and will you be there Friday?

Any time is OK with me ..if I am ever not there the fella who will be is Gordon.. he is expecting you anytime you arrive...
I am in Tabby at the moment but will be going back up home early in the morning.. Friday morning.

When you arrive the dogs will jump up.. they wont bite and are just excited.. to stop getting the car scratched stop and open the doors...they will stick their heads in but wont jump on the paint work if you have the doors open.

I will round them up but is if I miss them and so you know how to talk to them...

Bundy is the big one.. to get them to move away from you say "outside" ... it means to them get out of my space... 3 times they should leave your space.

Had a go last night and it was very wet .... but clearer than I have had for a while.

It could be clear the way its going. I hope I hope I hope

Rob its 986 Buldog Rd ... the shack is 9.86 klms from the start of Buldog road (left side) so set your tripo meter thingy (that is a must do).. but I will get a sign board up there on the road assuming I best you there in the morning. There is an old caravan inside the gate on the left and a small dam down from that ... if there are heaps of old cars you are in the wrong place that will be the neighbours place furhter down.
alex

Stick to the right down the drive the left is washed out. It looks as though you are lost but the shack will be about 200 metres down the drive.

Well it was my pleasure thats for sure:) ...
Numbers were up by 100% on our first meet thanks to Rob;) .
Apart from Gordon lighting bush fires every time he wandered off:scared: ,     :)

all went well, the sky was pretty good later in the evening I felt and we saw some very faint objects..there was something I could not reliably say I could see:shrug: .. but that was early and it was low:D .

Rob the Sun scope was excellent..I could spend all day on that. Love to do a movie thru it:) ;) .

To see the effect of different EP,s and filters was great:thumbsup: .

Thanks Glen for effectively doing most of the cleaning of the 12 inch:thumbsup: ..you could notice the difference I reckon:) .

I have been working hard on the shed:) ... added another scope to the rig on the pier (70 x 600) so I get rid of that find the object problem;) .

Wired up with a new battery:thumbsup: , got a 12 vlt hair dryer:thumbsup: , wired in light, fan, winch, mount, and cooler unit:thumbsup:  ... only an inverter to go...$60... got 6 more wheels:thumbsup: , 2x angle iron to fix the floor:thumbsup: , and changing the winch set up:mad2: .. the friction thing is not working well and is liable to snag:mad2: ...so its a simple drag the hook out system or add another winch:shrug: :)   ...
So what have you guys been up to:) ?

Ron,

Not real sure mate, I'm hoping he will make an appearance @ north Casino

property he has no access to the outside world. Either that or he's down
in Sydney being very busy.

Thanks mate, he is as you probably know on several lists and seems to have just vanished without indicating he was going to be missing for a week or so. Either myself and a couple of other forum owners have sent him PM's and as yet no response.

Of course it might all be perfectly cool and he might be doing some real estate stuff with his young bloke, time will tell :P

I got out for a lil while Saturday before the rugby come on. Looking at targets
mainly galaxies in Leo, Coma Berenices and Canes Venatici. Objects
nabbed were N3607, N3608, N3684, N3686, the Leo triplet, N4725, N4314,
N4274, N4278, N4245, N4656, N4631 (Whale GX), N4395, N4214. All except
the leo triplet and N4631 I hadn't nabbed before. Then I moved on to the
usual show stoppers with Saturn and Jupiter getting a look in too. Nice
views of Jupiter, then the cloud moved in from the SE.

Pitty about the wallabies got whipped at the post by a couple of field goals.
But I suppose it better than the Australia B team who were flogged by the
junior All Blacks 50 to 0 even with 7 wallabies in the team.

Tue: Saw two flares, the 1st @ 5:24 was brighter than the second @ 5:33 despite the opposite being predicted.
Wed: Just been out with the 20x80s. It was CLEAR as, but the 60kph westerly and 9C temp soon sent me inside.

Glen. Here’s an event, that maybe worth having a look at. On
the evening of the 28/08/2007, which is the night of the total
Luna eclipse. Starry Nights is telling me Iridium 73 will transit
the Luna disc from our locations. I will see it just over a minute
before you here in Coombell. Might be kinda nice if it just happens
to flare at the same time. Could be a photo moment

Unfortunately the Moon will only be about 5 degrees above the
horizon. Anyways I've attached a couple of images of the path
Iridium 73 is predicted to take. Showing the date and time and
the path flagged at every 5sec increments.

Graham,

You should be able to see Iridium 73's Luna transit on the 28/08/2007 too.

I put together an image of the event as if you were standing at the northern
end of the Missingham Bridge.

The same with you Alex, but I think you will probably have trees or hills in
the way with the Moon being low when it occurrs. If you can you will see
it just before me.

Well it's pretty clear here except for someone putting a match to something.
Hopefully it'll clear before dark.

Take care when entering the property, the access road has a few deep pot
holes at the start of it, probably best to keep left and drive slowly.

what was the galaxy near omega cen .. I can't remember if we found it or not ... I went from your place on friday night rob to the centre of brisbane the next ..I guess theres some ok spots around to observe up there
but the light pollution is /was so bad .. could just see the crux and a few bright stars here and there.

The galaxy was NGC 5206 @ mag 11.6 to the east-south-east of Omega Centauri.
We did nab it in Glens scope.

Ya got to feel sorry for the folks who have to contend with that. I think
I would find it rather frustrating.

How was the Saints

Just had a phone call from Steve Fletcher in Grafton. They have a group of about 20 amateurs down there and he has a 14". They recently persuaded Grafton and Lismore councils to install full-cut-off street lights. They meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Aero Club at 7pm.

I forgot about those chaps. I tried to go down to one of their meetings when
I first started getting into astronomy 4-5 years ago. I forget the name of the
chap running it then, I remember trying 2-3 times in a row and always
something came up and the meeting was canceled. I had forgotten them until
I got you message.

I'm keen for a car pool down to one of their meeting if your going.

Graham and I met two young guys from near Lismore at the Qld Astrofest. David and Darren plan to come and observe with us next new moon. Darren has an 8" on a ball mount. We will have to change the name of this thread, I suggest Richmond River viewing nights.
Bought an 8mm Hyperion at the QldAstrofest and tried it out this am with good results. It is nearly parfocal with my 13mm Hyperion.

cool, a couple more to add to the group. We're up at Alex's place next
month, aren't we. Richmond River Viewing Nights sound good to me.

I've tried a 21mm Hyperion and your 13mm, very nice ep's they are close
to the XW's imo.
