I intend to increase my solar array but all quotes are based on the existingsmall array being retired and removed. They’re of an age when that makes sense anyway but it does give rise to a bit of a dilemma. What todo with the old panels. Local council tip wont take them. Are there any recycling options? I am sure I can make it the new contractor’s problem butthat sort of avoids the larger issue doesn’t it?

Yes, the whole recycling side of these things will need a significant work over the next few years, but as per usual we as a society are unlikely to be very proactive about it.
If they still have some functional value, you might be able to sell or give them away to a farmer, etc who could use them for field pumps, etc. Just not for them to go onto someone else's roof.

The only mob I know doing this is in Adelaide. They recycle the alu frames but all the rest ends up in landfill. A real issue and it's only getting worse (https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2018/05/23/if-solar-panels-are-so-clean-why-do-they-produce-so-much-toxic-waste/?sh=14134a9c121c) with ground water contamination.

I have a couple of 250W 24v panels that I would like to get rid of, they are part of an old shed solar power system I am dismantling. I was thinking that an ad on Gumtree might provoke some interest, even if just for a give away. Working panels should have some residual value.
Hi Peter,
Advertising them for free on Gumtree, as per Glen's suggestion, or on Facebook Marketplace would soon see them off your hands for something better than dumping or recycling: re-use by another thankful soul.
Best
