Just starting to set up my "portable" semi remote HEQ5 and solar gear after some time out of service....

It sits on the balcony some 4.5 mtr from the office laptop.

I've been using a 3m USB3 with a 2mtr extension to connect to the ASI cameras/ Firecapture. I know about the limiting lengths of the USB3 cables but this arrangement, touch wood, has always worked for me.

Yesterday was different....
Computer says camera connected....FireCapture after a few seconds " Failed to capture".

After a few abortive trials I used a new 3mtr USB3 cable and it worked first time!!!
I can only assume the connection between the USB extension and the USB3 cable is the issue????
OK, what about alternatives?
I see you can buy a USB3 to ethernet adaptor. BUT I can't see any ethernet to USB3 Type B connector for the camera end.....
Question: would this work ? If so, how do you find a USB3 Type 3 connector.
Appreciate any comment/ feedback.

Ken , as you know USB3 cables can be frustrating I use active cables with a
Hewlett Packard port replicator as some cables will draw too much current from a small laptop. I use two of these joined together. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CableCreation-16FT-Super-Speed-Active-USB-3-0-Extension-Cable-USB-3-0-Extender-/353319929078?hash=item52438244f6

Ken
I’ve used a 5m long USB3 cable ( Startech part no. USB3AB5M Active cable ) for my ZWOASI2600MC imaging camera and also for my ZWOASI120MM-S guide camera for the last 6 months without any problems at all
I’ve used $25 and $40 USB3 cables at 5m long and they have given endless connection issues
These Startech Active USB3 cables cost me $190.00 ea which seems ridiculous but have not let me down in 6 months of use , everything else I’ve tried drove me insane with issues
Money well spent IMHO !!!!!!!

Ken,

Lindy cables in Brisbane supply very high quality cables and adaptors. I have used Lindy 10m active cables for many years with nil issues ever.

Below are what I use for my Solar setup from the 174MM USB3 to my laptop indoors. I have nil dropouts. I think using the shorter 0.5m USB3 type B to the camera makes the difference as at first I tried the longer supplied ZWO cable and that's where I did have dropouts.

Peter,
Thanks.
All the older cables Serial etc I bought from Lindy in the UK. As you say they performed 100%.
I'm going to try the active 5mtr USB3 extension cable suggested by Martin ....see how we go.
