I have just got my hands on "The Universe and Beyond" by Terence Dickinson (4th edition).
This is a brilliant introduction to astronomy with lots of gorgeous pictures and graphics. It's fairly recent and up to date and accurate, for example rather than parrot the usual figure for the diameter of the Milky Way, he gives the correct number, which is 80,000 ly.
