SOL filter experiment

Hi all,
I don't have any scientific justification for how I imaged SOL today but just to see what color/effects it applied to these single shots ISO 125 1/250 sec Canon 60D using 10" Newt.
Red one is using ha 7nm filter
Orange one is ha+LP filter combo.
Seeing wasnt the best taken around midday today,

I assume for complete safety these filters were used behind a solar film filter????
The Ha 7nm seems to give better contrast, and is a better focused image.
Do you have a green filter? OIII or similar, could be well worth trying.

Most definitely! I have a Mylar film filter that fits over the aperture.
Believe me I’ve nearly been on the wrong end of solar imaging. More so as a young surveyor way back doing solar obs for obtaining azimuth in the bush. Forget the filter on the scope and knock your eyeballs out like mike Tyson!

I haven’t any green filters no. I find it difficult to focus the sun - it was a bit blurry looking through at it today.

Anthony, I suspect all you are doing is colourising the image produced by the Mylar solar film. You won't get any of the detail as seen in proper narrowband solar filters. But always interesting to experiment - if you are very careful. Cheers, John W.

Thanks for the wise advice John. I understand now the difference in filter types and there application.
