New calculations show that sensitivity of Earth's climate to changes in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) has been consistent for the last 420 million years, according to an article in Nature by geologists at Yale and Wesleyan Universities. Does this mean the whole Golbal warming thing is a beat up?

Yes and no.
The whole thing is not a beat up as there seems litle arguement that things are heating up.
The explanation I like is we are still defrosting from the last ice age adding more green house is helping the defrosting and certainly helping those who can make a buck from cryiny the sky is falling.
Mr Al Gore is seen as a leader bringing the story to the world almost as simply a world citizen doing his bit..well he is well paid having apparently turned a cool 46million bucks enabling him apparently to manage a $30,000 a year energy consumption habit via his mansion.
Government use the prospect to push certain products having been somehow convinced prior to the matter being openned for public debate as to the merit of the proposition.. I say desalinators and nuclear power plants may fall into this basket but no doubt the alternat power people will benefit from "the beat up".
You give up your cash through fear..fear of not being loved, fear of having nowhere to live, fear of having no where to go and although there are other motivations fear is a good one to part fools from their cash.
However the secret to having the best life is to see good in everything and the good that comes is many mouths are fed, children of fathers who cant cut it elsewhere may now be able to go to private school from the dollars paid to hear of sky is faling stories and cash pushed in the direction of the person pointing out the problem will at least save you..and certainly making a sacrife is a ture and tested method humans relieve guilt and get on with doing real work without being bogged down in misery and low self esteme.
It may be a beat up but think of all who will benefit from it..new ideas can run old gear can be remodelled to meet the new market. Writters will have a field day presenting arguement for and against.
Still the problem arises that in the confusion some thing they can actually control change rather than generate ideas to cope with the world appearing before us..a hotter one.
Ron I have not finished my nights program so I had to be brief I hope my short approach does not convey an impression that although the matter may in many respects be a beat up it is a matter that you need to be informed upon to be able to discuss it at the next dinner party so in that regard constant research is important. Trying to get to the bottom of this is like trying to call a religious organisation uninformed as the believers believe and facts may not sway them and those trying to change their views need not even try for once established some will follow some will not, truth by now having been divided and shared out between those who believe and those who dont.
Humans like to change their cars their clothes their partners but other than that I dont know that changing comfortable habits is not a matter of great difficulty. So I suspect we must live with the fact humans will continue to built the green house gas, some will try to prevent them others will encourage them to make more some will adapt so as to capitalise on the change or the percieved change.
So what can you do.
I dont like commenting on this stuff anymore because I recognise offerring any views will find some in support some in opposition but few who are actively changing their habits.so there is little point ... smoking is bad on your health but that is not reason apparently to stop taxing the proceeds saying that the tax will fund health care. So a matter that can be controlled is not... Why worriy if it is a beat up or not it will not be given up by either side until something new comes along...remember the y2k bug they were worried but they fixed it now it is gone and will never return.

Good reply mate, and sadly I have little time tonight also. Very quickly I want to say that you said that the planet is recovering from a previous cold period, I agree with that, and the fact that over 420 million years the variation is consistent, I am convinced that, that is a long enough period of time to yield definitive results.

I am at this time casting my vote on the side of the 'beat up', however, like you, if new evidence is shown, i will certainly look and re-evaluate my opinion. :P
