NGC 2070 - Tarantula Nebula

Had a crack at the Tarantula Nebula the other night, my first time on the target. Unfortunately I only managed to get about 1.5 hrs of subs before high cloud blew in and ended it, and I was shooting from Sydney so the data isn't great. Looking forward to spending more time on it :)

Not entirely sure about the colours, but I like the look of it anyway.

Before you get more data try using the burn tool in either Photoshop or gimp on some of your dark filaments ..but sparingly and that will make it really pop.
You could use the dodge tool on some off the outter nebulosity to bring it out but just a little..it's easy to get carried away with both those tools.
I like to do it using two layers..in your case the image posted and a copy which you use the dodge and burn tools...then merge the two so you get between the original and the dodge and burn one as you will overdo it probably and when you merge you get something better than either of the first two...in fact that procedure works for me with simple things like applying contrast and brightness.. merging eases ones heavy hand.

Thanks, I had actually done a bit of burning on this already but things can always be improved! I'll give you a tip on doing non-destructive dodging too (I raise this since you suggested duplicating the layer to preserve the original - apologies if I am telling you something you already know) - assuming in Photoshop alt-click the new layer button and in the box that pops up choose colour - grey, mode - soft light and tick the 'fill with soft light neutral colour box'. This creates a blank grey transparent layer, on this you can just use the brush tool to perform non-destructive dodging and burning. Use black brush to burn (adjust opacity way down as at 100% it will be very strong) and white brush to dodge. You can just paint back over any areas you were too harsh on to adjust the effect as required.



The sad part is my L-Extreme arrived the following day :( That would have done even better with the tigher bandpass especially on Oiii!

This image is on the money with the colour representation for the Tarantula. The cyan in the stars and the dusty brown hue in the surrounds are cool, the filter I’d receiving good reviews so you’ll no doubt have heaps of fun using it.

Great detail and framing - I have the 533 too and often prefer the square look at works well here. Colour is obviously a very subjective thing. Personally I'm not a fan of browny-cyan, preferring more the pinker/red; but that's all it is, a preference and no right or wrong.
