Last night / this morning was another hubble night here in Canberra. Matt got some good data from his home and I also found some excellent seeing at Murrumbateman about 25km north of Canberra.

The image data from this session is probably the best data I've collected on Jupiter to date, it seems substantially better than the seeing on the 14th of this month.

I have a lot more to do, but here's one early processed image.

Scope: http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/lexx.html
capture: 50 seconds each channel in RGB

regards, Bird

Holy cow! :eyepop: Look at the detail in the GRS and around the white ovals.

Incredible image, I know there'll be better to come too! Very jealous that I was at work! Nicely done.

Anthony, What a fantastic image. I cant believe the fine red circle around the red spot *inside* the Great Red Spot. Also the small dark knots in edge of the bay below the Red Spot.

Just out of interest , how much larger will Jupiter appear at opposition??

I think it will get to 50".. it's currently 39.5" or so.

This is not a good opposition, it gets to 45" only. It's currently about 40".

You should split out the RGB channels, there's lots of interesting stuff in there that gets lost in the colour image, especially fine circulation around the GRS, both outside and inside. There is a fine blue coloured circulation system in there as well.

A better image is coming soon :-)

Mark, your mirror is doing it's stuff... I'm not sure how close to "perfect" it is, but it's hard to imagine the data getting any better than I had this morning.

cheers, Bird

Top class image Anthony, up there with the very best. Really like the detail inside the GRS.

ok, many a time, i see a great image and think, hey we have caught Damian Peach................( http://damianpeach.com/barbados06/jupiter/jup2006_04_19c.jpg )

I have never ever seen an image where the GRS is just like a 3d hurricane image from a plane!!!

Flick between the above images of Damians and Birds......I do believe Bird has nailed the best image I have ever seen!

Congrats Bird, yes seeing has a lot to do with it, but you really deserve this worlds best image!

That's a fantastic image, Anthony.

What a Jupiter season we are already having, and there's still a while to go before Jove is at his biggest and best!!!

We've certainly had a good month.

Let's all say a little "thanks" to the Weather Gods for a terrific March, and roll on April, May and June:)

While I'm chewing on other images I thought you might like this - this is a real-size image oriented the way I was seeing the raw data. Same image data as above.

have you got any single ninoxed quality sorted raws???

that is awesome

I can stick some raw data on a DVD for you if you want to have a play :-)

be warned, each run is 3 x 50 seconds @ 40fps, each frame is 600kb so that comes to about 3.6Gb for *one* image run.

If I compress the data on teh DVD then I might fit 2 runs on there :-)

mainly i was checking to see if you had the best red, green and blue raw image to post on the forum to give us an idea of the quality of the seeing

bird

mm, I'll see what I can do. The raw frames are very noisy, so not sure how much you will see from just one of them... Maybe I'll do a quick stack of just the best 50 frames or something and no processing? When the current processing run ends I'll have a play.

noisy is fine.....it is alwassy interesting to see raws for beginners to look at and to see how bright / gamma you have them etc

Bird,

Your previous images were great but then this!

These Jupiter images are the finest I ever seen from an amateur. Very smooth, your processing is right on, both color and virtually noise free. I find it difficult to find words to describe my impression of the images here - just outstanding!

These should be published in S&T as a minimum.

Ok, here's the best raw frames according to ninox. You've been warned, they're quite noisy :-)

Ordinary.

Just kidding.

Superlative work.

Congrats

Thanks Matt.

Davo, btw I leave the gamma and brightness at 1.0 (ie the default value) when I capture. Only the gain is cranked up, to maximum.

These frames had exposure times of 25ms.

Thanks for all the information Anthony and to see the Raw images.

Like D.P. said "these final images are the best I have seen"

thanks bird, it is good for me to have a reference point for rgb raw images in terms of brightness etc

It's taken a while to get more images processed, I ran out of disk space and had to buy a new drive (amongst other things).

Anyhow, here's another image from a few minutes later..

cheers, Bird

Bird, these images are awesome. Non-astronomers wouldn't even believe they were taken from Earth, let alone by an amateur.

BTW, your rig is equally impressive. As a simplistic kind of guy, I don't fancy sorting out all those cables every night!
