Sun comes alive!

"One of the biggest sunspots in years is emerging on the sun today. Hours ago it produced a C-class solar flare and a minor radio blackout over the Indian Ocean. This sunspot, if it holds itself together, will face Earth for the next two weeks as it rotates across the face of the sun, potentially setting the stage for a sustained stretch of solar activity. This morning, I see a group of at least sunspots close to the edge.

Saw the news and first images on Spaceweather.com last night and it does look impressive, an image on SOHO looked like it was actively flaring or at least had a strong prom involved. Am eagerly awaiting Sol to rise above my limited horizon so I can get a look at it.

Now the solar party is being joined by AR2782....getting better by the day!!

:windy: I would not be so enthusiastic about the CME's associated with large sunspots myself.

Hi All

Seems there may be more activity due in the another few days.

FARSIDE SUNSPOTS: NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft is monitoring a pair of UV hotspots on the farside of the sun that might be big sunspots. We will find out soon enough. The active regions will rotate into view over the sun's eastern limb 3 to 5 days from now. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.

One sunspot has appeared at the edge, this morning.

Its so new, that I thought it might not appear on "The Sun Now" images, but it does. Anybody know when and how often these are updated?

One new Spot today (21st Dec) that is right near the edge. On the Sun Now image it just appears as a smudge on the limb, so I assume that image was taken some hours ago.

AR2794 is looking like it could be a beauty, just in time for holidays, weather permitting.

Had a look with the 8"SCT this afternoon with my Thousand Oaks filter.
Quite nice should be worth watching for further development.
Wanted to take a pic but intermittent cloud frustrated, plus it was so
darned hot in a Roll Off Roof Observatory.
Try in the morning if clear.
