I was getting data for the Tarantula Nebula (NGC2070) last night when it occurred to me that M42 may have been over the house and yes it was.

Like a lot of us I started my astro journey with M42, though with no knowledge and a beginner telescope the results were ... poor (to be charitable), but by the time I got enough skill and a decent OTA M42 was available only at times I was deeeeeep asleep.

Anyway, this is a single 10 minute exposure from last night, quickly cropped and fiddled with in PS.

Great for a single exposure - well done. I like the colours (maybe a little strong). Thanks.

Thank you all... It's been a long road to get something I feel comfortable sharing, particularly with the skill level around this site.

Yes I can see why that was a satisfying result Jeff, nicely coloured, well done

I've been doing this astrophotography malaki for nearly 40 years now and here is my first M42 (https://pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/66994020/original) :D  bare in mind it's just a scan of an old creased and wrinkled B&W print, not properly kept :ashamed:(sadly, I have lost the B&W neg)

and my latest M42 (https://pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/171062987/original) (which was taken nearly 9 years ago...must be time for another shot of her )

So things do change and improve, enjoy the ride :driving: :computer: :)

That is stunning Mike, just stunning... and technology has moved so far in 9 years it's going to be worth another go.
