G,day all,

Just got the info i wanted from a certain dealer and boy what a shock!!
To get a 12" Dob up to Nth.Qld will cost me $606.00. Thats 2/3rds the cost of the actual scope. It'd be just as cheap for me to drive to Brisbane and pick it up myself.
I know it's not the dealers fault but what a shock. Just have to wait a bit longer and enjoy the crappy old binos,LOL. Well thats my whinge for the week.

Cheers:mad2:

Hmmm.

Does seem like someone's having a lend.

It shouldn't cost that much?

Sounds like your paying for the entire semi-trailer. Try Andrews or bintel.

Gday
Here's a copy of what i recieved.

"The OTA's cardboard box measures 50cm x 53cm x 160cm. Tube diameter is about 35cm. Height and width maximum dimensions for the base are 65cm x 65cm. Overall height is about 150cm. Freight charges are $606 !!! "

Like i said "What a shock"

Don't sound right to me either, I had a 12"Lx200, inside large aluminium case, plus giant tripod sent from Perth to Ballarat Victoria, on a select carrier, to my front door, and that cost about $300.00, thought that was pretty cheap actually.

That is definately too much. A 12" Lightbridge would cost you at MOST $159 delivered to the most remote part of Queensland.

I know the feeling I was quoted $200 from Adelaide, and $240 from Syudney for a 10" dob to come to perth, and I thought that was more than 1/3 the price of the scope.

I tried to buy a new book from the US publishers Willman-Bell, who do a lot of astronomy stuff. The book was $US34 and they wanted a further $US62 for postage, packing, insurance etc. I didn't get the book. I'll wait for it to come on line at Amazon, or appear in one of the local shops.

Which book, Geoff?

Duncan, $250 inc insurance to freight my 12" Dob from Sydney to Mackay a few years back, I thought that was steep.

I'd second asking them to check!

Then consider ringing around some courier companies yourself and see if you can arrange them to pick up and deliver for you. A courier that specializes in your area may be considerably cheaper than the supplier's default courier.

G'Day Duncan,
Why don't you look at purchasing a skywatcher Dob from NVT, Freight charge within Australia is only $18.

That NVT site is useless.

Nothing happens when you click on most of the telescope sub category options.

G'Day Matt,
I don't have any problems with the site. They do not hold a lot of Celestron products but they do hold skywatcher products and all their sub catergories within the skywatcher range listed items.

One of my friends just recently bought the EQ6 goto mount (version 3) from NVT and only got charged $18 freight.

Cheers

Hi Chris

In fact, they don't appear to carry any Celestron product despite a large number of options to click in the Celestron category.

Weird

I got a 10" dob from Andrews and the freight was $65 from Sydney to Mildura - I'm guessing your quote is from Bintel.... not only that but when I ahd a problem, they shipped it back to Sydney and back to me again without charge.

The Bintel and Andrews dobs are basically the same (same factory etc. I think).

Unless you asked for air freight?

Funny thing, I have been pricing 10" dobs from all over the place, and the total cost of scope and postage for me in Perth seems to work out very similar - about the 800-900 dollar mark. Even though the cost of the items "for pick up" is a lot less" in some cases. It maybe cheapeer to get them overseas...

Duncan would it be an option for you to get it sent to Cairns and then manage pickup / delivery onwards from there by other means? I suspect the freight issue is due to the locale you live in, not the overall distance as such. Cairns is still a major "destination" as such and delivery to there shouldn't be too bad I suspect.

As a matter of interest I had a 10" dob sent last year from Andrews to here on the Sunshine Coast (an hour north of Brisbane) cost approx $70.

(I DID drive to Mackay and back myself in 2 days to take possession of my 12" dob with Argo Navis, etc rather than have it freighted - but that's a different story)

G,day all,

Due to ethics i'm not going to name this dealer. Rather once the music gear is sold i'll be trying somewhere else. Even if it means doing a 2day drive eachway.Hopefully this damn gear goes this w/end so i can get the ball rolling in earnest. In the meantime i'll keep sussing it out. After all i'm only an hour from Cairns and freight comes up here every day. There is also V.I.P Furniture Removalists straight across road from me and they go to Brisbane evry week return so i'll suss them out as well.

Cheers,
Duncan:thumbsup:

Hi Duncan,
Freight for a 12" dob from Glebe to Yungaburra North QLD would be $310 using TNT road express.
I can send one tomorrow if you wish. Let me know if this is of interest to you.

I wonder how much to send it by rail?

Hi Duncan
Freight companies seem to charge what they like if you don’t have an account with them and that’s if they will deal with you at all. I have been trying to get a fair price to ship an item from NSW to North West WA $250 was the cheapest for 17 Kg the dimension are to large for Aust post. If I was sending from Perth to NSW (back loading) it would cost only $36

I contacted Andrews 2 weeks ago and they quoted me $180 for the GSO 10" dob and $220 for the GSO 12" dob to post to Perth WA. So it appears that there is no fixed rate, but a sliding scale, depending on how far way you are. I have heard that BinTel are even more expensive.

Hi Peter,
Actually Bintel quoted me half the original amount posted. In fact they have been super helpful.
Cheers,
Duncan
