80th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain. The turning point in the campaign came on September 15 which has been officially name 'Battle of Britain Day'. On this day Some 1,120 Luftwaffe aircraft were sent to attack London but were repelled by just 630 RAF fighters and two days later Hitler postponed his plans to invade Britain. We give thanks to the courageous men and women that served to fend off the German invasion but most of all the pilots who did not come home 1,542 killed 422 wounded 1,744 aircraft destroyed.

Wow .. that is impressive. England I gather but where?

It’s on the north bank of the Thames just west of the London Eye on the opposite bank. I would often catch a ferry from near there, down to Greenwich. The imperial war museum is another must see.

In my time in the RAAF I attended many Battle of Britain commemoration parades, even volunteered for them. I had an opportunity to speak with a pilot that flew in the battle and he had some interesting stories. Lately I have taken an interest in reading about the Polish Squadrons, 302 and 303, that fought in the battle. Once all this madness is over I will get to England to visit some of the WW2 places I have read about.
