Hi Everyone,

I'm after a few smaller items, and especially from people around Sydney would be good, to save postage by picking up direct. I can go and buy all this stuff at the local shop but thought I might give someone the opportunity of offloading some of their surplus stuff first. Here's what I'm after:

A small spirit level, that can sit on an EQ5 mount that doesn't have one.

A small compass, hopefully oil filled, suitable for locating the SCP.

A powerful green laser light.

A finder scope, ideally 9 x 50 Orion, if not one that has two screws and one spring. I don't like them if they have three screws. I need the wedge that holds the finder scope also.

A battery charger that will suit the battery inside my Canon 300D EOS camera.

Naturally when buying, I am the poorest man on Earth, which is the direct opposite of when I'm a seller

Ron, a small bulls eye level can be found at almost any camping store (they are used for levelling c'van fridges and other etc) mine was two dollars. If you view from the same site borrow a compass and scratch the earth (set up a lead mark), save your pennies and buy a Telrad (the second best investmet you will ever make, although a good observing chair comes close).

Regards Greg.

Well I haven't waited the mandatory seven days and seven nights of rain and cloudy since they arrived, so by my calculations, I should get to use them about Sunday. They do look might fine in the snazzy case they came in, with the word MEAD emblazoned on the side

Thanks for the tips also, $2.00 sounds a miserly price that should attract me :P

With MEAD emblazoned on the side I would be a little concerned. sorry Ron.

Cause every one will want to borrow them of course;) . And in time you will realise why some EP's command the price of a scope;) .
When you find the shop that has a compass to point to CSP let me know cause I want one. But seriously a compass can cause you more trouble than they are worth Ron.. for a start there is a thing called magnetic deviation which means simply the compass will point 12 odd degrees (I cant recall the exact variation) off North..and I cant recall which way either but it means you just dont point it and it finds North..add to that iron objects in the area can throw them off, and magnetic field varies from place to place...I found that out the hard way and it near cost me my life..but that s another story..do you have time now...no ok just bear with me I will draw you something and post it that will have you finding the CSP form the stars.

You know, I actually opened the draw and took a look just to make sure you weren't all having a lend of me, and yep, I do have your initials on my case...but guess what....you already have a set of EP's so you won't want mine ;)

On the issue of the SCP, I had a lesson on finding it last night, and it is 12.5 degrees, I was told

When I told my doctor that my daughter knew how to find the CSP he proceeded to waffle such that it was embarrassing but he had no idea yet was not going to be beat by a 4 year old kid... try setting your mount angle at approx 30 degrees that will be closer than 12.5 maybe

Being a fair pool player sees one not needing a finder scope.. can find the Ring Neb by thinking the scope is a big cue.. hope that gets you out there tonight it looks reasonable here so far

No Alex, I'm speaking of the compass being offset 12.5 degrees, not the 34 degrees for Dec

So judging from the replies, the thing I really need to chase is an excellent finder scope. I can source a level and compass locally but the finder scope is a little harder to find. Surely there must be heaps of people with spares that they would like to convert to cash

Okay, I went and purchased an excellent compass, as well as a bulls eye level, so the only thing I need now is a finder scope, if no one has a spare for sale within the next few days, I'll just go and buy one from a shop

Speaking of which, I was playing with my new compass today and pointed the North towards the North and then adjusted 12.5 degrees to move me from the North magnetic pole and towards the North Celestial Pole (all the reverse of course for the Southern Hemisphere).

I was not sure which direction to adjust by 12.5 degrees so firstly I tried East but this took me further away from where I believe it should be. So then I tried West and that appeared correct to me.

This was just a hand held exercise, but my question is, am I correct in adjusting by 12.5 degrees in the direction of West when I am pointing North? :P

A good secret friend helped me out with the answer to my compass question. From that it led me to this really good webpage: http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/geoAGRF?pnloc=prospect&latd=-33&latm=00&lats=00&lond=151&lonm=00&lons=00&elev=0&year=2007&month=03&day=29&Ein=D#

yeah, here in Auckland the magnetic declination is 19° 24' East, if people get stuck trying to find out what there magnetic declination is they can call there local aero club they will know .
