Hi, I recently had the oputunity to pick up a good deal on a near new SynGuider 2
https://skywatcheraustralia.com.au/product/equatorial-mount-synguider/

What i am hoping to find out there is what is a good guide scope to connect it to?
I kind of overlooked this part unfortunately, got the SynGuider 2 but now realise i need a guide scope to connect it to.

Would something like the Orion Mini 50mm Guide Scope be a good start?
www.bintel.com.au/product/orion-mini-50mm-guide-scope/?v=322b26af01d5

Just starting to dabbling into Astrophotograhpy and got this SynGuider 2 as a start to see how i go.

I have two mounts on which i want to give it a try on, first being the Dobsonian goto mount and the second will the the AZ-EQ6 mount.

Any advice or information would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Peter,

I used a synguider with reasonable success for quite a while. They’re a handy, portable option to get you started. The chip itself is not super sensitive and the response is not super quick so my advice would be to get a reasonable sized guidescope with a slightly longer focal length. I used mine with an 80mm F/5 that you can get from Astroanarchy for $100. You’ll need a short extension or diagonal to get it to come to focus too. As far as the two mounts goes, your goto Dobsonian will suffer from field rotation so I wouldn’t bother with using that setup. The EQ6 has a good payload capacity so it will easily handle the weight of the larger guidescope.

Hope this helps

Ryan

Thanks for the reply,
Do you by any chance have a link to that guide scope that you was referring to?
I found their site a tad hard to search on but did find this one:
http://www.astroanarchy.com.au/telescopes/Skywatcher_80x400.html

Not sure if that was the one you were referring to of not, but was looking for something simple to start of with.
Couldn't find anything on there about a short extension though.

But any links or advise would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Peter

That looks like the correct one. If you go here http://www.astroanarchy.com.au/accessories.html and scroll down almost to the bottom of the page you will see the guider setup that Pete sells. It is just after the collimators and torches.

Obviously as you have the Synguider you won't need that part of the bits he has there. I started guiding with this setup from Pete about 4 or 5 years and it just worked. I didn't use the Synguider though.

Thanks for the replies, appreciated.
Looks like i will need a dovetail bar to mount that guide scope on.
Will this dovetail bar fit the standard slot where the finder scope usually goes?

Thanks.
Peter.

No, they are about half again the width so wont fit the finder mount point.
