Sigma Octantis code number or name?

Hi, I was just interested if Sigma Octantis has a code number or different name?
I have a Skywatchen Synscan hand held unit and was just trying to find it in its many menu options.

So basically i was just interested to know if it has a different name or code number,
In the hand held unit, it gives me 5 different options to search from:
SAO
Caldwell
Messier
IC
NGC

Would it appear under any of these by any chance?
Any information would be appreciated.

Those are object catalogs, not star catalogs (for galaxies, nebulae, etc). You'll need to find something that has stars in it probably under a different section.

Bojan has given a good reply, listing the top alternative catalogue references for Sigma Octans
The Simbad database gives another 25 (!!!???) catalogue identifiers.

Hi Peter

SAO = Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Star Catalog.

The SAO catalogue includes 258,996 stars, including B1950 positions, proper motions, magnitudes, and, usually, spectral types in a locally-developed binary format. While the SAO catalog is more or less complete to V=9, with 4,503 stars fainter than V=10, the PPM catalog is fairly complete to V=9.5, with 102,672 stars fainter than V=10 and 22,395 stars fainter than V=11.

The other catalogues you listed are for deep sky objects such as galaxies, etc.

Peter, SkySafari shows Sigma Octantis as SAO 258857.

Were you hoping to use this as an alignment star?
The alignment stars used in the Skywatcher hand controller are much brighter stars and usually Named Stars and work quite well for alignment.

The SAO list in the hand controller is not a complete list of SAO numbers.

If you are having alignment issues please let us know the mount model and you will get a lot of good experienced advice I’m sure.

Thanks for the reply, SAO 25887 was what i was after.
No i wasn't going to use it as a guide star, I was just interested to find it as it is fairly close to the South celestial pole,
Was mainly just looking to find it just out of interest.
Just trying to learn my way around the sky and will be a good point to find when i more into a AZ-EQ6 mount.
