View Full Version here: : IIS Beanie for Winter!

Hi all
A few months ago, some people expressed interest in wanting to purchase an IIS-embroidered beanie, to keep the noggin' warm during cold winter observing nights.
Well I'd like to get an idea on numbers, as it makes a big difference to the final cost.
So please, express your interest by voting in the poll. The poll is non-binding of course, but don't vote yes if you don't intend on buying one.
When/if there is sufficient interest, i'll put the order in and create a booking/order form. I'd like to get them done in time for SPSP (I can bring them along) so vote now! :)
I don't have a picture of how it will look, but if you use your imagination, you will see a black beanie with the white/red/white IceInSpace logo embroidered on the front.
The price is unknown at the moment, but would be in the vicinity of $25-$30. They are good quality.

I'll take 3...especially if they will be available at SPSP.
Even if they are not ready then I'll still take 3...
My head is really big and will stretch them out quickly...
No, really I'll need one for me a my two sons...

I would have been interested if I didn't already have one of my astro club's beanies (ASWA) :)
So I voted "No Thanks" because I only have one head :)

Yep Mike - count Jenny and I in for one each! Cooma's looking chilly this year.......
Cheers
Chris
Don't think I could face another freezing Canberra winter without one of those on my melon:D
I am thinking that a cloth patch would work better... what do you think? you could put it on anything then....
I am sure dave p. will take 2 of the beanies tho ;)
(am I going to be in trouble for that from him?)

You bet! It will hopefully become standard night ware at the Qld Astrofest this year. At least we can hope to get Dennis out of his silver poncho ;)

I put myself down for one but may take 2 if the quality and physical appearance is acceptable to HRH Liz.

No in fairness I think Ving was actually referring to the scientifically proven fact that Tasmanians have two heads:P ;)
Of course this is only a hypothesis:lol:

Not to get far off base but I think your response (needing to explain it) is even funnier than Ving's original post...
And to bring it back on topic...yes Mike, I will take 3 for certain...

Hate to be a pain Mike but can you describe the beanie material a bit more, ie most beanies I've seen are made of somewhat open weave wool, I find they tend to let some cold air through.
By means of comparison I have one made of a "solid" closed weave synthetic material that is absolutely windproof but still retains a bit of stretch to fit snugly - ironically I bought this at 'Woolies'.
If the beanies are good and warm (which I'm sure most folks here will need geographically speaking) then I'll probably be in for 2 or 3.
Hi Mike, I'm in for one.
Cheers
Yes I'll have at least one.
I may even order some for my kids.

unless it comes in a peruvian inca alpaca woolen ski shop style type, with modern thermal acrylic lining - like my current fave, i have to decline :P
but good idea :D

What's better fabric to use?
1. Polar Fleece
2. Cable Knit
I have no idea.
jjjnettie
21-03-2007, 09:44 AM
Polar Fleece is far superior to cable knit. It won't lose it's shape/stretch as quick as knit, the embroidery will be neater because it will be on a flatter surface, if it gets wet you just shake it out and put it back on yer noggin.
And it's warmer too.
(I used to make beanies for the Scouts, can you tell?)
If they are the same price though, couldn't you just order the one you prefer? Or would that just create more work.

Thanks JJJ, great info! Polar fleece is also (very marginally, < $1) cheaper than cable knit too.

as long as its black! or hot pink
Hi Mike, we have fleece beanies with the RFS and they are toasty warm for sure.
I agree with Houghy black is best, we can be Ninja astronomers
Cheers
yup polar fleece is the way to enlighenment :)
navy or bottle green would be good, just to steer away for the ever present black.
ps: sorry dave :ashamed:
geez Ving. Ferrari's are red. You wouldn't order a green one would you? :) Has to be a black beanie if you think about it :P
if its red terry, is needs a tan interior ;)
say no to black!
dont you know that black puts on the kilos!

I always thought it was pizza.
I'll go with the flow Mike, it would be nice to have one thats a bit bigger than my sons beanie that he has had for many years.

Polar Fleece in light blue please :D
Starkler
21-03-2007, 07:11 PM
Polar fleece doesnt stretch like wool knit does it? This might work against a one size fits all scenario.
PF in largest size in black please :D
acropolite
21-03-2007, 07:42 PM
Polar fleece would be the go, it's warm, comfortable and dries very quickly when wet. :cold: But... I like the look of the cable knit ones better. The polar fleece jobbies look a bit $2 shoppish to me or is it just the way they're presented.....

I'm too sexy for this..........
black IIS beanie, black IIS tshirt, grey IIS trackie daks pulled up high so the IIS tatooed tackle is evident, white IIS socks pulled up high with the track suit pants tucked in and to top it off, IIS sandals
don't forget the favourite accessory....black IIS head torch and black label IIS astro babe magzines.........
Nice one Dave  thats left me with one amazing mental image.
Cheers:thumbsup:

lol nice one Dave.. don't forget the IIS pens and IIS stickers!
I've ordered the beanies - once I get an invoice i'll let you know the final price and get an order form up and running.
I'll have them before SPSP, so will bring them along.. saves on postage for those wanting one (or more).
light black for me thanks..

The beanies should be arriving at my house today or tomorrow.
I'll let everyone know the final price once I see what I can post them in. It's likely to be around $20 incl. postage.
They will of course be available to buy and/or pickup at SPSP, so bring some cash with you or feel free to pay upfront. I'll get an order form online in the next few days with any luck.
I'll post a picture once I have them.

What is Winter  .... Ohhhh that must be when it stops raining and the night time temp plummets to 18deg :P ;)
Nice Idea for a Beenie, but I think I can just get by, without one (unless I venture to the deep south in Winter:scared: )
